Is there anything easier than water for some engaging and fun play for little ones?! Not in this house!
So excited to be running some sensory play sessions at my local community centre for 1-2 year olds and 3-4 year olds this term! I’ll be sharing heaps of things we’ll be doing - and this is one of them: taking our babies to the ‘beach’ for a swim!
Being in Australia, we never go to the beach without suncream - so of course our babies will need it too (Check out the recipe we used for it here #playfullittlelearners_bodypaint)
Happy Monday! Was yours filled with any water play? xx
What a weekend!!! After a busy morning / early arvo at a birthday party, it’s been awesome to reset and relax the rest of the day! They’re definitely tired, as these four bookworms sitting this close together (relaxed) is SO rare
I had a HUGE weekend ticking some stuff of my never-ending list! (Thanks again Anna @imaginationtree, you are a beautiful human being ). I’ve already let the cat out of the bag that I’ve written a children’s book .... can’t WAIT to share the other two things I’m plotting away on! Check out the sneak peek link in my profile if you wanna be the first to know - less than 4 weeks to go Happy Sunday! xxx
ECZEMA FRIENDLY BODY PAINT
Do you / someone you know have a little one with eczema? Tag them below! It’s so common for our under 5s!!
I came up with this little recipe a few years back (2012) as one of my kids had shocking eczema. Whenever we did any painting, he’d always get terrible flare ups as he could never resist using his own body as a canvas! This little concoction is such a good solution as he’d always walk away with skin that’s silky smooth instead of dry, red, sore and cracked / bleeding :(
To make it:
1. Moisturising cream + cornflour (enough to make it a bit thicker like paint)
2. pop a drop of food colouring in the bottom of a muffin tin/paint palette/ice cube tray
3. slop the moisturising cream/cornflour mix in and stir.
TIP: I only ever use a tiny bit of food colouring as I don't want it to stain their skin
I’ve shared this recipe a couple of times before ( check out this hashtag: #playfullittlelearners_bodypaint) and it was one of the things we had on the go at the new sensory play sessions I’m running! The kiddies LOVED it - and some even walked away with it on their fingernails as a ‘manicure’ Happy Friday!
What did you want to be when you were little? When I was 6 years old, I wrote: ‘when I grow up, I want to be a teacher and an author.’
I managed to tick the first one off the list a decade and a half ago and I’m SOOOO EXCITED that next month this almost-30-year dream will become a reality too! Yep, I’ve written a children’s book!! Illustrated by the gorgeous @caityelizabethjoy (rainbow cover art inspired by the lovely @apompomaday), this rhyming story is dedicated to my four perfect, noisy, tall-for-their-age blondies (Dad is 203cm!!); and it’s all about embracing everything that makes you YOU :)
I let the cat out of the bag to my Play Squad a few days ago! Jump on the ‘sneak peek’ link in my profile if you’d like to know how to be the first to get it! (I have a feeling @thecreativetoyshop may have something to do with it... ) Cant WAIT for the end of November!! Happy Thursday, you perfectly amazing humans
What’s your go-to, late-arvo, manage the tired kids strategy?
Ours (second only to a reading books cuddle) is a #smallworldinasink.
Small worlds make my heart happy - and when my kids play with water in front of a mirror, they’re happy too Win win!
I had set this up for my 3.5 yr old, but my 20 month old was engaged for three times longer (I even needed to move it to a tub on her high chair so I could finish dinner) - swipe across to see, and play with sound! Happy Monday! To quote my 20 month old, hope it was filled with (at least one) “kiss and hug” #smallworldplay #playfullittlelearners_smallworldplay
Giant ssssspiderweb ssssight words ssssound sort anyone?! Flashback from last year!
Homework used to be a HUUUGE battle for my oldest fella (now almost 7). Now it all has ‘clicked’ for him, but we still like to keep it playful and fun! Check out #playfullittlelearners_homework for more ideas we’ve shared
I wrote a Playroom eBook for all the people who have asked about our storage ideas - it’s totally free (and always will be ), check out the link in my profile if you’d like a copy There’s also a sneak peek button in there - I’ve been working like a crazy person on THREE huge things I’m launching in November, check it out if it tickles your fancy
We've just come back from 13 days of camping, so I have approximately 80 million loads of washing to do...
Rather than tackling the enormous and never-ending washing piles, I have been known to create random things with my three year old instead (#worsthousewifeever) - this is a flashback pic to the time we made a washing machine out of an old cardboard box (beer carton )!
Empty cardboard box, Kmart $3 adhesive vinyl, a couple of bottle tops, gloopy glue and woolah! My 3 year old manages to get her laundry done quicker than me...
Please tell me I'm not the only one who has more than three baskets of clean laundry to fold?! ♀️Happy Sunday!! xxx
The rainbow wall makes my heart SOOO happy- it's an upsized version totally inspired by the lovely Lauren @teacher_types , made with leftover paintings from our crafty sessions!!
The girls are playing with a dino small world with kinetic sand, dinos, greenery, stones and of course our awesome @educating_kids mirror! This set up was from this morning's session at the community centre I work at a few hours a week, and kept them VERY busy while I was setting up the other invitations.
Have a COLOURFUL weekend lovelies!! (PS if you're a fellow West Aussie - HUZZAH! Holidays are heeeeeeere!! ) xx
My husband thinks I'm a whole new level of random with the things we put into our freezer.
A couple of days ago we put some magnetic marbles in a fish shaped IceCube tray (from @kmartaus) and topped it up with blue water to make some frozen magnetic fish! After they were frozen my 3 year old popped them out onto our big tray and had a play with them using some magnetic wands (both from @thecreativetoyshop). She had a ball exploring with them!
Once upon a time, there were four kids. They made mess, because they were playing.
They had tantrums, because they were learning how to regulate their emotions.
They woke up in the night because ENTER REASON HERE ♀️ .
Every time I catch myself starting to wish away whatever deliciously challenging stage we're going through (at the moment it is the fact that my girls cannot seem to sleep in the same room without waking each other up at some point in the night) I stop as I KNOW that it'll be over in the blink of an eye (and who needs sleep schmeep anyway right?! ) .
There's only going to be so long that she'll be totally immersed playing with birdseed, (new) dog feeding bowls and My Little Ponies...so I'll be throwing down a giant sheet, grabbing Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash and embracing all the amazing mess and fun that comes along with it.
Happy Monday! Hope your day was filled with magic entwined in the ordinary! xxx
Sheet: queen sized bed sheet
Sensory Play items: birdseed, bowls and giant glitter
TASTE SAFE BABY 'PAINT'
Flour. Water. A few drops of food colouring. Big tub of water on standby. Easy peasy, messy entertainment!
I'm pretty excited to be running some sensory play sessions for 1-2 year olds at my local community centre next term, I've been planning up a storm! This is one of our fave ideas, but I wanted to ask you - what's your kiddos favourite type of sensory play? If you've got (or know of!) an awesome sensory play account, please tag it below, would love to check it out Happy Sunday!
PS - we saw WHALES again this morning, a mum and her baby! Check out our stories xxx #playfullittlelearners_baby #sensoryplay #babypainting
