This is Ghazipur Landfill in New Delhi. The same rubbish mountain that was in the news in June this year which is on course to rise higher than the TAJ MAHAL in the next year. It takes up area of more than 40 football pitches and rises by nearly 10 metres every years, as per a report in Hindustan Times. At this rate of growth, it will most definitely be taller than Taj Mahal by 2020. In 2018, a part of the hill had collapsed killing two people. Regular fires from the landfill are commonplace, which leads to a spike in air pollution.
So what's in this for you?
The landfill is a reflection of our CONSUMPTION CHOICES and our abject failure to segregate waste at source. It also is a bad showing on our municipal authorities who pass the buck of poor management on to consumers. It's a failure at a lot of levels. But we could change this reality.
HOW?
We need to start thinking of the impact of our consumption choices on the environment and end-of-life scenario of the products we consume.
We also need to start segregating waste at source and get into composting our wet waste, which is a little over 50 per cent of all the trash produced in India, as per a study by CSE. The way out of this mess is manifold, but let's focus on REDUCING OUR WASTE first and foremost. Next, RETHINK your consumption. REWIRE your mindset to start source segregation at home. These are small steps but can lead to monumental changes. --------------------------------------

Some of you already know, but those who don't, listen in: PM @narendramodi on the occasion of India's 73rd Independence Day pitched for freedom for India from single-use plastic. "CAN WE FREE India from Single-use plastic? the time for implementing such an idea has come. May teams be mobilised to work in this direction. Let a significant step be made on October 2," he said. This was the second time since last year June 5 World Environment Day when his government has taken a strong position against single-use plastic. While it's a great call to action to end single-use plastic, we still need to define what single-use plastics are. For some, it's PET bottles, for others it's polythene bags. The definition isn't uniform and misunderstood mostly. Solid waste Management rules, 2016 as well as Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 are in place, but there has been no implementation on ground. The result is in front of all us to see. However, the call to action from our Prime Minister needs to be applauded and gives us hope that some concrete steps will be taken from October 2, 2019. Let's root for good initiatives and good intentions. And let's also see through the greenwash and raise questions wherever possible. (Picture credit: amazingly talented @tasitokpay - for well narrated and poignant stories, check out his page guys)
P.S: (this post isn't an endorsement of a person or party involved, nor is it a political message. So chill out) ----------------------------------------------------

"Sanitation is more important than political freedom"
On the occasion of India's 73rd Independence Day, it's a good time to revisit what Mahatma Gandhi had said during our freedom struggle. Gandhi had strongly condemned the Indian practice of hiring people from the lowest rungs in the hindu caste system who were at one point of time called "untouchables" to manually clean latrines, urging countrymen to clean up after themselves. It's in this context, he had said that sanitation is more important that political freedom because he understood the need to improve hygiene and cleanliness in the country. His thoughts should serve as a constant reminder that "Our waste is our responsibility" and we should stop this selective "othering" of a particular section of people who clean our waste for us, day in and day out. While the country has achieved political independence, have we, even after 73 years, achieved freedom from insanitation? Come join us for plogging and understand end-to-end waste learnings. #kindnessmatters #virtualgandhimarch ------------------------------------

Plogging is an act of kindness, towards the environment, towards the people you engage with (volunteers, waste pickers). Why waste pickers? When you understand end-to-end waste learnings, you learn to appreciate their jobs, their lives and their contribution to making our societies and communities clean. The debilitating effect of not being a part of the formal wage system is for all to see. The least we can do is be kind and thankful to them for their mammoth efforts, at the same time hope that they are absorbed into the formal system where they are given job security, fixed wages, safety, and most of all RESPECT! Plogging also fosters young people's leadership skills and helps them build sustainable and peaceful communities. This post is dedicated to #kindnessmatters campaign for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global youth campaign on kindness aimed at mobilising the world's youth to achieve the 17 SDGs through transformative acts of kindness. I would urge people to document their act of kindness using #kindnessmatters and #virtualgandhimarch ---------------------------------------------------- #KindnessMatters #virtualgandhimarch #ploggaindia #plogging #ploggers #PloggingIndiaChallenge #plogrun #plogger #plasticpollution #beatplasticpollution #beatairpollution #plasticfree #plasticfreejuly #oceanplastic #cleanseas #saynotoplastic #litter #trashtag #zerowaste

We are organising a plogging session this Saturday in collaboration with @letmebreathe_in @pluctv creators such as @farout_kid_ - to explain what plogging is and how just about anyone can organise their own plogs no matter where they are. More like a DIY thing. We are aiming to do this as a monthly project where we explain to you several aspects to consider when you organise a plog cleanup in your own locality or wherever it is that you want to. A big chunk of this project revolves around mobile storytelling, for which you can directly ask experts @letmebreathe_in to give you a low down on how to narrate your stories effectively to reach a wider audience. This Saturday, August 10, we are plogging at Deer Park, near Hauz Khas Village at 6:45 am sharp. Do give a thumbs up in the comments below if you want to join for sure. ------------------------------------

When you see people adopt plogging as a lifestyle, it means they believe this could be one way to challenge the status quo, of plastic pollution and waste in general. There is a selective apathy when it comes to waste and we have tried to address the elephant in the room from time to time through plogging. We were delighted to find out that some Indian Super League (Football) players, who also play for Indian national team, had taken up plogging to challenge the everyday use of plastic and address this apathy, the conscious ignorance of people who don't seem to care enough for the environment. Three players - @deependra_2022 , @shubhamsarangi_09 and @amanchetri9 - took our #PledgeToPlog last month to be part of the global plogging movement that's sweeping the globe. We would like to thank them for their commitment as this gesture goes much beyond visual optics. Thank you to @world1fs for reaching out to us for the campaign and @prakhsoni @varunachreja for facilitating this! -------------------------------

There are some who are critical of public cleanups, arguing that cleanups DONT ADDRESS HE PROBLEM AT SOURCE. True, it doesn't. But... it does something much more Long lasting and that could lead to addressing the problem at source: behaviour change and positive reinforcement that not all is gloom and doom when it comes to plastic and waste in general. Critics say beach cleanups are just visual cleansing, much like all other cleanups and that once the tide turns, it will bring more trash with it. But we think that one bucket full of trash picked up from shores, means one bucket less trash reaches our oceans. It is definitely more time consuming and requires much more effort than simply stopping the industries producing single use plastic. An argument can also be made that "civic action can make sense only when it results in change for the better" and that focus should be given rather on more pressing issues like composing or waste segregation. Our point is: through plogging we address both the need to compost and segregate waste at source as we ourselves do waste segregation at home. And we do hope that people eventually adopt composting and waste segregation at source through the activity of plogging. Positive reinforcement through plogging all the way!! ----------------------------------------------------

What our routine plog (jog and pick up trash) looks like! We begin with a small briefing on the agenda, a 15min warmup, we set out to plog for two hours, collect trash separately into separate bags (recyclables and non-recyclables separately), conduct a waste audit of the trash picked up to Identify the single biggest polluter, following which we handover the recyclable trash (PET bottles, metals, glass, aluminium) to waste pickers/recyclers and non-recyclables are thrown into dustbins that are regularly cleaned by municipal authorities. The central idea behind plogging is to maximise resource recovery and understand waste segregation so that less waste reaches landfills. Come join us next time to understand how and why we do it! ----------------------------------------------------

The FUTURE of sustainability will be centered around REGENERATION: restoring and replenishing what we have lost. The focus will also be on creating communities that will take charge of the situation that's increasingly running out of our hands. We need to innovate and look for different ways of utilising the waste we have already created and prevent future waste generation. A part of so called regeneration will also focus on consumers demanding more TRANSPARENCY from brands and increase pressure on them so that consumers can shift from a sustainability mindset to a sustainability-oriented lifestyle. At some level, we all believe (including us) that we could be doing more to stop the tide of plastic pollution and waste generation, and that's a great mindset to have. Let's do whatever we can in our power to make a difference, it could be as small as saying NO TO A STRAW. ----------------------------------------------------

Just like last year, on July 25, this year too we had the opportunity to conduct a workshop and plogging session with the new batch of students from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi. While talking to the Students about plastic pollution, we kind of also reflected on our own journey so far since beginning the plogging initiative last year January 2018. The more things change, the more they remain the same. So much has changed and evolved - our knowledge, our experience, our confidence, yet what hasn't changed since then, is our conviction to effect behaviour change through plogging and simplifying the waste management narrative. We continue to take the message of waste segregation at source forward and document stories of people (ordinary and extraordinary) who have great ideas about sustainability. Plogga India was conceived as a regenerative and non-judgemental space and initiative where we strive to make the conversation on waste mainstream, so it's easy for people to understand and adopt certain best practices in waste management without hassle. Thanks to @dodge_mon for facilitating this interaction with over 300 design students. Means a lot to us! -------------------------------

Does the trash you throw into recycling bin, actually gets recycled? Fabrice explains

Feels great to be back to our forest Sanjay Van after a break. It looks as beautiful as ever, barring two things: litter and concretisation. Do you know that DDA has cleared up some forest area and cordoned off some spaces so that some people could do yoga on concrete floors inside the forest? They don't care if nilgais get bruised in those barbed wires, they don't care if people litter, they don't care about the ecosystem. A whole bunch of things are going wrong in this forest. These pictures are from today's plogging drive, and the amount of trash you always end up collecting is staggering. ---------------------------------

We were hoping to find some litter on a trek at Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval in Haute Savoie in France. But it was so CLEAN! Aside from a lone slipper and a three plastic packaging, nothing on our trail! And Savoie has a remarkable segregation system where people throw waste into designated dustbins. How we wish this could be implemented in India, but we still haven't understood the two way segregation. We have a long way to go. ---------------------------------

We had the good fortune of presenting our #PledgeToPlog project that took us to 5 countries last year at the Embassy of India in Paris, France. The idea was to promote plogging with focus on understanding country-specific waste management challenges and solutions. We spoke about a possible foreign exchange programme for plogging in India and France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท to promote cultural ties as well as understand waste management in our respective countries. Hopefully we shall soon see something concrete on this plan in the coming few months. Will keep you guys posted!

A big thanks to the @runecoteam for facilitating and collaborating with us for plogging in Paris for our 6th International Plastic cleanup drive. So much energy and good vibes shared by all team members as we scoured the streets of Paris for litter and made sense of where the waste goes once we throw it away. Knowledge building has been at the centre of our plogging drives right from the beginning and we are happy to share this space with The Run Eco Team. Thanks to @fabricelandousy @morlaluciana @la.fourmiliere @claireaurea and all others who joined us for the drive. It makes sense when we all get together for a cause, in this case it was plastic pollution and how we all can become agents of positive change and inspire those around us to do their bit. Cheers guys, for now, Goodbye to Paris. Until we meet again! -------------------------------

A poster on this garbage collection truck in Louhans hits the nail on the head and something WE ALL should strive for. It says, "Make a gesture towards reducing trash, we all have something to win doing this". The first thing we all need to do is REDUCE OUR TRASH GENERATION. Everything else comes later. If we continue to generate more trash than we are already, let's not blame authorities for not doing their bit. Less trash means less money/resources required to deal with it. And the shift to a circular economy should be a priority, even if it means paying a little more for the infrastructure to put the process in place.
Say AYE in the comments box, If you all agree that REDUCING TRASH the first step in waste management. ----------------------------------------------------

DO YOUR BIT AT LEAST! Segregate your waste at your homes and demand that your trash be collected, transported and treated separately. While some of us know where our trash goes once we throw it away, not everyone does. What we do know by now is that not everything can be recycled despite the product screaming IT IS RECYCLABLE. we also know that most of the trash probably ends up being incinerated in waste-to-energy plants or landfilled, without any chance of resource recovery. But despite all the grey areas, we are optimistic about the future of waste management, because lots of individuals, and organisations are thinking deeply about this subject and are demanding policy changes. We have enough reason to believe that if you do your bit, everything else will follow eventually. BUT WE NEED TO START TODAY. There are thousand reasons to complain what is not right with our systems, but we need one strong reason to believe that what we will do today will lead to the greater good for all. So let's be the positive change. In this picture, we have documented four way segregation at Sixt-Fer-ร -cheval just to show you that there are people in other countries like France who are doing waste segregation which is quite simple to do. Some parts of India are already doing good amount of waste segregation, but it's still not penetrated the collective conscience of larger public. We are hoping that India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ can learn some of the things that France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท is doing to address waste. Here's to India-France relations ๐Ÿ™Œ

Putting up POSTERS on dustbins on what all waste should go in a particular trash can is one sure shot way of ensuring all your waste (or at least some) goes to its rightful destination. Some areas in France practice four to five way waste segregation but it's not uniform in all areas. however, we found the waste segregation in Chamonix quite simple yet effective: they had five way segregation of waste - one for only glass items, one for only plastic bottles, aluminium, paper, and cardboard, one for plastic bottle caps and batteries, one for compost, and one for all other types of trash. What we found the most interesting element was the explanation about what all are recyclable and what are not, what kind of trash is to be dumped in designated dustbins. We noticed that most people took it quite seriously, washing their plastics and glass before dumping because they are already informed by their municipal authorities about the proper way of disposing garbage, which is absent in India. This education takes time, money and infrastructure. In India, we should have a similar system of labelling, where the Municipal authorities paste posters on dustbins about how and why that trash is supposed to be dumped in green or blue dustbins. It's challenging, but if we do a few steps right, the rest of the waste management chain has the potential to get streamlined. ----------------------------------------------------

READ UP, SPEAK UP, TAKE ACTION. From the day we started out till today and henceforth, our primary objective is to inculcate the habit of waste segregation at source among people. Litter picking is all ok, and it's amazing to see others do it as well, but without understanding waste, and practicing segregation, we can't go much further. Lack of waste Segregation is the reason why mixed waste goes to landfills and they catch fire and become a health hazard for all, but most urgently the marginalised communities living around it. Through plogging, we want to make people understand, just like we have, the larger context of waste and it's implications on our ecosystem. This waste narrative is important to understand because this is what will give us clarity and help us see through greenwashing by corporates. Let's pledge to know waste better than we know right now. ----------------------------------------------------

Posted @withrepost โ€ข @hainglachele Throwback to the time when I actually started documenting plastic waste - this one is from one of my solo bike ride to Spiti in 2017, when I had come across an installation enroute Kaza from Rangrik. This installation, which was made entirely out of discarded plastic PET bottles, had a deep impact on how I perceived plastic from then on. Things were never the same, and for good reason! Travelling expands your horizons, helps you gain new perspective and context and in this case, a paradigm shift in my thought process regarding waste! -------------------------------

Plastic takes MORE THAN 400 YEARS to degrade, so most of t still exists in some form. Let's look at how an understanding of these three waste economies is crucial to analyse our consumption pattern and how we can change it. Three economies make up waste management systems. First, Linear Economy, second - Recycling Economy and Third, Circular Economy. At present, majority of us employ a Linear economy, which is based on a Make -Use - Dispose model. Highly unsustainable and myopic. Second is Recycling economy in which materials are made to be reused up until a certain point and then eventually goes to the bin/landfill/incinerator. The term "Recycle" gives us a lot of confidence to put the trash in the bin without even giving it a second thought right? But guess what? Most of the stuff that says it's recyclable, DOESN'T EVER GET RECYCLED. So don't be greenwashed into thinking your decision of choosing that recyclable coffee cup is going to save the planet. The Third is Circular Economy- this promoted closed loop recycling, aiming to reuse waste indefinitely without it going into dustbins. It's all about rethinking design to make products last as long as possible. This is the ideal economy but not an easy one to achieve. To get here, we as consumers need to move away from a 'disposable' lifestyle, and rewrite certain rules of consumption that have been in place for decades. We as a society need to start considering whether it's worth trading off some of the conveniences for a clean and healthy environment. It will require us to think differently, and intelligently.
P.S: did the sketch on our phone so it seems like a 10-year-old scribbled it but what the heck! ๐Ÿ˜„ --------------------------------

We follow a 5R + P model of sustainability, in which one of the R Is about "Respect". This is when you respect people's lifestyle and consumption choices without enforcing your opinion of what sustainability should mean to others. Here, you open a channel for dialogue where you urge people --whom you think consume a lot of single-use plastics or material that is not sustainable in their daily lives -- to gradually reduce their dependence on such plastics and shift to a single-use plastic free setup. The point is to not be arrogant or rude or condescending but to instil a sense of confidence in others to make them feel confident enough to shift to a sustainable lifestyle. Arrogance will always be met with arrogance. So let's try to positively engage people and make them see sense in your point of view through facts, logic, rationality and good work on ground. Thank you to @letmebreathe_in for capturing this narrative. ------------------------------------

What is PRECYCLING? PRECYCLING is a mix of refusing and rethinking your purchase of a product on the basis of what kind of plastic it is made of so you don't have to think about recycling that plastic after you dispose it off. If you are able to identify the plastic before you purchase, you are at a position to refuse and rethink, thereby not bringing in the plastic into our ecosystem. So less waste! You will see that there is a resin identification code in most plastics with numbers on it from 1 to 7. Usually, plastics from 1 to 4 (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE) have a chance of being recycled and as you go further down, the chances of recycling decreases. Now, if a plastic says it's recyclable, doesn't guarantee that it WILL BE. Because if it's not picked up, and given further upstream, there is no way to make sure it will be recycled. Saturday's plogging drive with @adidasrunners Delhi led by @nivi.fitrabbits in essence explored the idea of PRECYCLING as a way to reduce individual plastic footprint. We had the support of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) who showed up with their garbage trucks and took our segregated waste as is. They explained to volunteers why households need to start segregating waste at source for any kind of change to happen. After our drive, we jogged, sprinted (sporadically) to reach the finish line at Lodhi Garden, where we had a brief cool down session followed by refreshments. This was the culmination plog for Run For The Oceans as we wrap up the campaign and look forward to more meaningful collaborations with like-minded organisations. -------------------------------

Fortunate to have been a part of the Adidas Run For The Oceans (RFTO) campaign, where we were given a big platform to talk to at least 6000 people about what we do and how it's connected to our oceans. Met the architect of VERSOVA Beach cleanup @afrozshah_ for the first time as we shared our vision of a single-use plastic free world and a circular economy. This was also our very first beach cleanup where we pulled out huge amounts of plastic trash, and we also understood one thing clearly: there is very less possibility to segregate waste in a beach cleanup as most of the trash can't be recovered for recycling. It's also more challenging than usual cleanups in cities. The worrying aspect of plastic pollution in oceans is MICROPLASTICS. So many of the plastic we fished out from the ground had disintegrated and remains in the ecosystem. This gives us a sense of how careful we need to be with disposing plastic! We were also acquainted with the scale of this plastic pollution menace during the cleanup as even after Afroz Shah's monumental efforts, there is so much cleaning left to do. It's crazy! While Versova beach has definitely gotten a facelift of sorts, the cleanup is was like a tight rap on our heads about how we continue to choke our seas. This exposure was good for us as we got the opportunity to also meet amazing personalities such as @tara.oceanista - who is a marine biologist - @thecookie_runner - AR captain in Bengaluru - @vjanusha - @saiyami among others. As a culmination for the RFTO, we are organising a small 3k plogging activity at India Gate this Saturday June 15 at 5:45 am. ----------------------------------------------------

A very special day today, as we ran 5k as well as conducted a low waste sustainability workshop for Run For The Oceans campaign managed by @adidas and facilitated by @adidasrunners Delhi team led by @thedefaultrunner and @nivi.fitrabbits / we spoke about different types of waste economy (linear, recycling and circular), waste segregation at source, recycling, waste reduction, waste incineration, reorientation of mindset for a circular economy, composting, different types of plastics and their recyclability and the way ahead. We also asked people how they will reduce their plastic footprint and take on more sustainable practises at home and elsewhere. The biggest takeaway was this: we don't need to upend our current lifestyle to adapt to an eventual shift to a circular economy, just small tweaks like carrying cloth bags to shops, using reusable water bottles, ditching the straw, and overall reducing our waste with focus on home composting will get us there, gradually. We need to start today though, no matter how small our Actions! Thank you @shaidasharma @shivoham_03 @deepti.chhibber and the brand team for organising the entire campaign around Run For The Oceans. It was a pleasure to collaborate! -------------------------------

Plogging at Jahapanah City Forest with an amazing bunch of people (friends and family) mobilised by @sugandhachandra - we understood the distinction between different types of plastic and their recyclability. Also, waste segregation, which is a big part of our awareness drive, since we started our community last year in January! We had a brief warm up session coupled with intermittent jogging and some exercise (pushups, pullups) at the end of our session. We take plogging seriously :) ---------------------โ€”-------------------------------------+-----------------------------

On World Environment Day, we took the pledge to reduce our own plastic footprint and understand the close linkage between open dumping of waste and air pollution. India is today the world's second polluted country, after only Nepal, according to a study by the Energy Policy Institute of Chicago (EPIC). Particular pollution is so severe that it shortens the average Indian's life expectancy by more than four years relative to what it would be if World Health Organisation (WHO) air quality guidelines were met. But even as this data gives us some good for thought, let's try to reduce our contribution to plastic and air pollution. -------------------------------

Posted @withrepost โ€ข @thebodyshopindia @ploggaindia was part of the plogging Clean-up drive held in Jahpanah Forest prior to World Environment Day celebration. Hereโ€™s an advice by Abhimanyu Chatravorty on how we can reduce plastic waste; always make sure to segregate dry and wet waste so that dry waste can be recycled instead of going to landfill and wet waste can easily get decomposed. This is a small step that we can implement in our homes and work towards making this planet a better place to live in. This Clean-up drive in association with @ploggaindia and @thehappyturtleindia was an initiative to drive awareness on how plastic waste management if done right can help control plastic pollution. Share with us your tips for reducing plastic waste in the comments below.
