We came up with another idea for what to do with some of the fabulous bounty of tomatoes at the greenmarket – add them (and some basil from the garden) to shrimp and Cannellini beans – with lemon zest and juice, plus Italian hot pepper flakes contributing brightness. The Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Langenlois 2016 paired wonderfully, with rich notes of white pepper, fennel, green melon (near the rind), sage, an overtone of mild eucalyptus, and a lively lemon zest topnote. It was assertive enough to meet the savory flavor of the shrimp that perfumed the stew, yet subtle and complex in its way of mingling with all of the flavors. A lovely summery ensemble for a still very summery evening!

“Well I do like to maintain my ladylike demeanor,” remarks Mutley, “Especially when there’s an interesting rosé in the vicinity....And this Nebbiolo rendition certainly appeals to my theatrical bohemian side....” It’s a rosé with real character, Lady Mutley – we think you’ll like it enough to linger...and we’ll also be pouring whites and a red that are all well suited to accompany holiday weekend picnics and barbecues. Please feel free to join us to taste them all – 4:00-6:00 today – at Prospect Wine Shop!

We saw soft-shell crabs at the greenmarket again and couldn’t resist. We had so enjoyed them with Loire rosé earlier this summer that we wanted to try a different version, and we chose the beautifully delineated Thomas Labaille Sancerre “l’Authentique” rosé 2017 – its delicate melon deepened with the lightest shades of red fruit, plus a citrus highlight and an underpinning of sleek chalky stoniness made for a nicely bright contrast to the subtly rich crabs. It also went very well with our tomato tart with a Parmesan crust and aromatic herbs from Ardeche (see next photo), and green beans with a light mustard vinaigrette. We’re still savoring summer!

“I really want some of those delicious treats they have here,” sniffs Mutt-Mutt, “but what I think I truly need to make this summer afternoon perfect is some serious mineral input...say, in the form of this classic Muscadet....” We’re happy to provide some, Mutt-Mutt, and we’ll be pouring three other minerally, summery wines, too – a rosé from the Canary Islands, a Portuguese Alvarinho and a Piemontese Nebbiolo. Ah, summer....and more goodies from the greenmarket. Scallops on a bed of fennel, with a light sauce involving Hiedler’s absolutely lovely Grüner Veltliner Steinhaus 2016, and a soupçon of ouzo. Alongside, a gratin of assorted eggplants and heirloom tomatoes, with goat cheese and plenty of garden herbs – rosemary, thyme, basil (see next photos). The wine harmonized delightfully with all of the elements – rich and elegantly structured – lively citrus (lemon and mandarine zest), firm stoniness, with various subtle but bright herb notes – Thai basil blossoms, lemon balm, and fennel, of course. We so appreciate the work of the winemaker, farmers and fisherfolk!

A very summery dinner on a very muggy August evening – starring a quintessential New York fish – the richly flavorful Bluefish. We sautéed the filets with lots of herbs from the garden, including Thai basil, fennel fronds and lemon balm. Brovia’s distinctive and rather intense Roero Arneis 2017 was a spirited partner for the fish, with notes of slightly bitter fresh almonds, a hint of lime zest and green apple peel and green melon near the rind, all rounded out with mineral density. For dessert we poached yellow nectarines and white peaches in the Borell-Diehl Rieslaner Auslese 2016, and served them with pistachio-flecked mascarpone – and the Rieslaner Auslese, which recalled Acacia honey, almost ripe Anjou pears and, appropriately enough, white peaches. Wonderful greenmarket fare like these fruits, vegetables and fish makes us love summer, despite the humid heat.
