2019 has been super rad so far. From @mile2marathon kicking ass, becoming a @lululemon global ambassador and continuing to navigate this crazy world w/ my #1 @genevieve_hall I have been having so much fun and loving the ride. I have also raced a whole lot, by mid-August I already had 4 x 10km, 3 x 1/2marathon, 25km trail, 2 x 50km trail and a full marathon in my legs. I was quite excited to get after @towaterfront42k training, but when it came time to flip the switch and go full on my legs and my brain just were not there. I gave myself a few weeks to relax hoping things would come around, but every time I had tried to hammer my legs told me to piss off. I’m simply tired and beat up. So I’m unfortunately gonna pull out of STWM. My legs need a rest and I need a mental recharge. As fun as this year has been I can’t run a fast marathon off good vibes and fun. To run a fast marathon you gotta be ready to dig deep and get a little dark, and to be honest I’m not there. It’s a bummer, but c’est la vie. Gonna keep running easy, gonna remain positive and gonna set my sights on something else down the road. Right now the trails are calling my name, time to get dirty. Cheers! 📸 @robshaerphoto

Well, that was quite the weekend. My first #Seawheeze experience and what a damn whirlwind that was. This a’int your normal footrace. This race is all about connection, community, fun and all the other positive things. From the athlete panels w/ my fellow Global Run Ambassadors @daddydarkrdc & @samanthagash, to sharing the startline with the legend that is @ryanmeatysauce and all the incredible cheer stations along the way I was having too much fun and almost forgot that I was in a damn race...until I got over the Burrard bridge for the 2nd time and @verrellewyatt was hot on my heels. Boy did I have to dig deep over the 2nd half of that race. I am so happy to have held on to take the win. With the race being run it was time to get back to the fun. That post race party was just absurd. @lululemon doesn’t mess around. Long story short- #seawheeze2019 was friggen epic. 📸 @lululemonyvr @radmencreative @mike_krupica

Cool shot by @tmax_16 from @takethebridge. That sure was a cool event. We have another fun one this weekend with #seawheeze2019. It’s gonna be gnarly Charlie, looking forward to all the things.

#tbt @towaterfront42k 2010. I was there to pace @reidcoolsaet as he chased the 2012 Olympic standard, I took him through 1/2 in 65something, then I got really really tired and stopped. He kept going and got his OQT. @dylanwykes was also rolling on the streets of TO that day, I think he was doing the 1/2, he probably won. Either way, this was a long time ago and that day was a turning point in my career. I had just come off a disappointing track season and that pacing experience brought the fun back to my running, I fell in love with the marathon. That was my last day as a steepler, and first day as an aspiring marathoner. I have been fortunate to share the roads with these two dudes my entire career, they have continued to inspire me both on and off the roads to this day. Hell, Dylan is even my damn boss now! helping to build @mile2marathon with him has been one of the most fun and rewarding things I’ve ever got to do. We’re a bit older, we all got ourselves awesome wives, those two each have a couple kids, I have a weirdo cat and we all still love this sport. Can’t wait to line up with them on the streets of Toronto one more time on October 20th for the 30th anniversary of the @towaterfront42k. It’s gonna be a fun day. If I manage to run sub 2:20 one last time out there I’d be a fucking stoked. #letsgo 📸 @runcrs

For the 3rd year running @mile2marathon has shown up to @summerfast10k with the largest crew and also taken the prize for the fastest team! Man, I love my squad what a special group of athletes and coaches. It really warms my heart to see folks of all ages and abilities coming together to celebrate their love for this sport. Be it running unsanctioned races through gravel fields, traditional road races around the seawall, or one of our group sessions at the track, M2M athletes are getting the work done, building relationships and enjoying the process together as a team . That there is just good shit.

Last night was neat. @takethebridge made their Vancouver debut and the whole night was pretty dang special. TTB is an unsanctioned race where an hour before the start all racers (40men/40women) are given a few check points to hit but no set route on how to do it. It is up to the racer to decide on their own on how to attack it. We started in a gravel lot, ran to a boat dock, hit the Burrard bridge, ventured over to under the Granville bridge and then made our way back. All in all it was about 4km of lung searing fun. I was fortunate enough to take the W.
Massive thanks to @darcybud @takethebridge @lululemonyvr @vanrunco and all the volunteers for bringing this event to our city. I was once again blown away by the positivity that exists within our running community. Our scene is rad, good stuff YVR. 📸 @marlonx

Everything about this weekend at the @lululemon x @runcrswest Edmonton 10km was awesome. It was wonderful to meet and connect with the Edmonton run community- such an uplifting and inclusive group. Was also great to catch up with some old friends and interact w/@mile2marathon athletes in other cities. Massive thanks to @runcrswest for the show and @lululemon for being amazing hosts. I’m inspired, now I gotta get my legs going, because my performance on the course was wank. Gotta focus and gotta get proper work done! 📸 @photosculptor2

Last night I was invited to speak at @mindspaceyeg- a really cool initiative started by @akrice & @idolist that brings together the running community to have real conversations about the sport we all love. It was uplifting and inspiring to meet and interact with the Edmonton run community. I am pretty terrified of public speaking, but this was actually a lot of fun, thanks so much to everyone who came for making me feel comfortable and welcome in your space. Thanks @lululemon for helping make it possible. Was also great to see the @mile2marathon Edmonton squad out in full force! 📸 @shorelinegold @deantumibay #community #bettertogether #thesweatlife

One of my mottos has always been “earn the party” and on August 17th that is going to be happening big time. Going to start the day proper with the iconic #Seawheeze 1/2 marathon, it’s going be a blast, but the thing is still a 1/2, and a 1/2 is always challenging- the party will most certainly be earned on the streets of Vancouver. Fortunately for us, @lululemonYVR knows how to throw a proper party, and this years post race Sunset Festival is looking to be pretty rad- I’m talking #Kascade, Dancing, yoga in the park and beer, of course there will be beer. @Lululemon & @postmarkbrewing have collabed to release “Sun Set Go” the perfect summer beer-vibrant, crushable and delicious. Not running the race? No worries Sunset Festival is open to all, earn the party in your own way and hope to see ya there on Aug 17th. It’s gonna be a rad day. Next week I’m heading out to Edmonton for the @lululemon x @runcrswest 10km, on the 5th I will be collaborating with @mindspaceyeg to lead a shakeout run followed by a conversation around how community has evolved and my reason to run. Mind (S)pace was born out of a need to elevate the conversation about running, beyond just its technical elements and towards one around values, mindset, mindfulness and what self-care actually could look like for runners. Get in on the conversation through the link in the @mindspaceyeg bio. It’s gonna be a fun night. #thesweatlife #community #RunYEG

Ran the @runcrswest Scotia 1/2 yesterday. As always @ryanmeatysauce and his crew threw an amazing event, thank you! This event was my first ever 1/2 back in 2011 and the race that brought me to Vancouver for the first time (was also the first time I crossed paths w/ @genevieve_hall) I fell in love with this city on that trip and made the move out west a year later. Yesterday was a pretty good day. First off, it was amazing to see all the @mile2marathon athletes throwing down and having great performances. I get to work with a wonderful group of athletes, I’m a very fortunate dude. It was also really cool to get to race again with my old friend Kip Kangogo, I’ve been racing against that guy for 15yrs now...he usually wins. T’was also fun to roll with some very exciting up and coming Canadian talent- @csbalestrini and Preisner are legit, and I am keen to see what they can do moving forward. But I am pretty annoyed with my own performance. I have been dicking about too much and not training hard enough, and as a result I was pretty awful out there. Good news is that I can remedy that easily with some discipline and hard work. So I’ll do that. Time to focus and get fit. Thanks again to all the volunteers, organizers and sponsors who help make these races possible! Onward. 📸 @tonesterbc

Headed out to the Sunshine Coast last weekend for the @pjc_ultra 50km. Was an absolutely beautiful course and a really fun event overall. We should get a big ass group over there for next years race, who’s with me?
Anyways, I came 3rd, Which is ok by me. Next up it’s back to the roads for @runcrswest Scotia 1/2. 📸 @nochancenanc

What a gnarly last week(ish). Things got rolling last Wed w/ Global Run Day when @mile2marathon & @eastvanruncrew joined forces for an awesome group workout, followed by a sweet after party w/ the rest of the local crews supported by @lululemonyvr. After that I took off the Sunshine Coast with a bunch of buds to run the @pjc_ultra 50km. Such a gorgeous course and fantastic event. I managed a 3rd place despite being the worst downhill runner of all time. On Monday I had the opportunity to gather with many of my fellow @lululemon ambassadors for the Gathering up in Squamish. Such a great group, learned a lot and left that feeling inspired and jazzed about my new roll. Finally this craziness wraps up tomorrow with @sauconycanada Chase The Pace 5 as part of the Pacific Distance Carnival. It’s gonna be gnarly. If you are keen to have a fun night w/ racing, beer garden and other rad stuff swing by Swangard stadium in Burnaby anytime after 6pm. This is all good shit. What a community. Mark your calendars; June 5th is Global Run Day. Pretty much the best holiday ever. I’m gonna write a letter to JT to see if we can get it off work next year. Anyways, this is a day to celebrate the sport we all love. There are a slew of amazing crews out there offering some fun activities next week, @mile2marathon & @eastvanruncrew are gonna be teaming up to offer either a speed session or a chill social run option, so no excuses not to come! 6:30 @ Strathcona park. Pretty excited about this one. Pumped to announce that I’m going to be a global run ambassador for @lululemon. What does that mean? All sorts of rad stuff. Thanks having me on the team, let’s do some cool stuff. #lululemonambassador #thesweatlife 📸 @marlonx

Cool little video from the fine folks @runvancanada. Thanks for another great day at the @bmovanmarathon. These shots come after 30km when I was kinda dying, but at least I don’t look like a bag of noodles. Important thing to note, I’m rocking some @lululemon Fast and Free split shorts. Yeah, Lululemon is moving into the run scene big time and I couldn’t be happier about that. Ok, I’ll train harder and run faster next year. Onward! #thesweatlife #mile2marathon

“Our greatest achievement is not that we never fall, but in rising every time we do” -every motivational poster ever

Last weekend I failed to defend my BMO Vancouver Marathon title by placing a lame 6th place in 2:25:10. I hobbled off that course a broken soul, lost in despair and sorrow. Did I wallow in sadness? Did I crawl into a hole and wait for death? No! I took a long hard look in the mirror and screamed through a flood of angry tears “suck it up buttercup” The Goodr Vancouver Beer mile was a mere 5 days after the marathon. This was a chance to redeem myself and prove that I still have it. The competition was fierce and the pressure was high. But you know what? I F**king did it. 4 beers, 4 laps and 6:04 later I crossed that line a champion. Vindication.
Thanks @koleej for one hell of an event. Fun fact, 1/2 the podium went to my high school, w/ @verweel taking the women’s crown and @whittersnapss taking 2nd! I like to think South Secondary in London Ontario is the Best beer mile high school ever, beer mile legend @finlaysonjf also went there! Anyways, long story short, I’m the champ, frick yeah.

Coaches probably should not be drinking beer while their athletes are racing, but I had just run myself a marathon and I reckon I earned it. Congrats to @mattddrchs on throwing down a great one @ BMO w/ a 27min PB, you’re just getting started, there are still many more minutes to go! @mile2marathon #ilovemyjob

Ehhhh, I guess I’ll take it. The thing about the marathon is that you cannot fake it. I kinda faked a fast 10km a few weeks ago, but the marathon will expose your weakness and hammer ya for it. I came off a winter of trail running with a great aerobic base, and I had a few decent speed workouts in my legs, but I lacked that marathon specific work that is so important. I got off the line Sunday and knew right away that I had to be smart or things were gonna get ugly. I poked around with the lead group for 2km, but after hitting that split in 6:10 I knew that if I got stuck in with them I would be useless by 20km. I settled in at a pace that felt smooth and relaxed and just had a fun day. It was most certainly a challenge and I had to dig pretty deep over the last few km, but overall I am proud of the result. I think I still have a few sub 2:20’s left in my legs, I just have to decide if I am willing to put in the work to make it happen. I kinda think I am... 📸 @bmovanmarathon

Oh what a day! After the London Marathon in 2016 I took a step back from running and retired from high level athletics, my fastest races had been run and I was content to move on. I knew that running would remain a part of my life, but I wasn’t really sure in which form it would take and how involved I would be. @dylanwykes and I started doing @mile2marathon Wednesday night group workouts that spring, and since then my love for the sport has only grown. I still do what I gotta do to remain somewhat fit, but these days my greatest joys in the sport come from coaching a great group of athletes, helping grow Mile2Marathon and just simply being involved in this wonderful community. What we have going on in Vancouver right now is truly special. Yesterday was a celebration for running in this city, kudos to @bmovanmarathon for putting on a world class event, it was so uplifting to see all the different crews and training groups coming together to be a part of it. From the racers, the volunteers and to the amazing cheer squads it was a damn fine day. 📸 @tmax_16

It’s @bmovanmarathon race week! I am pumped to get stuck in and have some fun out there over 42.2 on Sunday. Which makes it even cooler is that I get to toe the line with one of my favourite runners in the world, Yuki Kawauchi. Yuki represents all that this great about this sport. Dude is tough as nails on the course, and a damn gem of a dude off it. he took the time to come join the @mile2marathon crew for our session last night. He ran the whole workout with us! It was a pretty special night to start what is sure to be a great weekend of running for our fine city. Thanks @tad_runner @dylanwykes & @lynnkanuka for making last night possible. Good luck to everyone racing! 📸 @stevekojima

Sometimes I like to take some time to myself, take some time to just think and reflect. I think about a lot of things during these moments of reflection. I think about my relationships. I think about the state of the world. I think about the person I am and the person I want to be. In this moment above I am thinking about personal growth, can I change? Can I go from the guy who only wears black shorts to a guy who wears white shorts? Are white shorts a thing that I can welcome into my life? 5years ago, heck even 2yrs ago there is no way I would even consider white shorts. I would have said “take your white shorts and hit the road, buddy!” But life is about being open minded, life is about taking chances, and with these @lululemon 7’ surge shorts (available online and in stores) I think that I may be ready to take that step, I think I just might be a white shorts guy. 📸 @lululemonyvr #personalgrowth #openmind #whiteshorts

Racing is fun. Just look how thrilled we all look to be almost finished the SunRun...good lord, I was done @ 6km, thanks for dragging me along boys (I was subsequently dropped like a bad habit about 100m after this pic was taken). 6th place in 29:49, super stoked to get revenge on that stupid 30:01 I dropped last year. Thanks @iamrobsmith for catching this wonderful moment.
