I was never certain what had happened to the caudal fin of this grey reef shark in Fiji, but whatever it was hadn’t diminished her curiosity. This species, like most other sharks, is immensely valuable as a living resource. Even ignoring the ecological value of healthy shark populations, one study estimated a single grey reef shark is worth US$1.9m over the course of its lifetime to Palau through tourism revenue (Vianna et al., 2010). Despite this, sharks have been heavily exploited for decades and many species are now threatened with extinction. Quite rightly, significant efforts are now being made to develop effective conservation measures to safeguard these wonderful fish. sevenseas_media #scubadiving #sharkdiving #shark #coralreefs #fiji #pacific #worthmorealive #underwaterphotography #driftdive #padi #deepdive #nature #biodiversity #coraltriangle #conservation #conservationoptimism #oceanoptimism #ocean #planetocean

Sharknose gobies (Elacatinus evelynae) are cleaner fish, they feed on ectoparasites and dead skin from their ‘clients’. However these little fish also eat sponges, sea squirts, coral polyps, zooplankton and free-living copepods. The fish in the picture is grabbing a snack from a thankful Squirrelfish (Holocentrus adscensionis)

Octopus are molluscs belonging to the class Cephalopoda, which is derived from the Greek for “head-feet”. They inhabit a range of ecosystems from shallow coral reefs to the deep sea, feeding on prey including crustaceans and small invertebrates. Their advanced camouflage capabilities are used in predation, defence and communication, and are based on the ability to alter both their colour and their texture to blend seamlessly into the environment. This individual was hunting on a sandy bottom in 8m of water in Tobago. #scubadiving #nature #naturephotography #scuba #education #underwaterphotography #octopus #cephalopod #marinebiology #camouflage #tobago #caribbean #travel #ocean #coralreefs #conservation #planetocean #sevenseas_media
