Ive been having a few issues with sound quality in my videos (coming soon!). I had originally purchased this @rodemic and had it hooked up to my Dictaphone to capture the sound externally, but the work required to sync this to the footage was killing my productivity. So I customised an iPhone holder by attaching it to a separate tripod, and then super glued the @rodemic to the top. There is a noticeable improvement, but now need to use it in-situ to really test it. But editing time will be reduced #bodgejob #worksmarternotharder #usewhatyouhavearoundyou

I had a great time yesterday visiting @jmakes_yt in his basement workshop in Manchester. He is incredibly creative and produces some amazing footage on his YouTube channel. Go and check out his videos by following him and clicking on the link in his bio. His entry to the Rockler Plywood challenge run by they guys over at @modernmakerpodcast was a particular favourite of mine. Not only can you see the creativity in his builds, but also in the way he creates his footage and it doesn’t end there, he then curates all the music to go along with his vids too! I learnt a lot from him, especially how I should be capturing my own footage and how you can kill flies with spray paint and adhesive. #meetingmakers #wewearourshirtsunbuttoned #watchthisspace

B A R N S P O T 2 5 . 0 6 . 1 8. Ever since I started living in a barn I now always take note of any barns that I may pass on my travels, mainly due to being more conscious or aware of them. This one popped up on the way back from Newcastle, in Kirkby Stephens just off the A685. I prefer the ones that aren’t used or are derelict, but it’s a shame these places aren’t utilised. #bitchinbarns #barnlife #blahblahblah

Wae'aye man! I was across east in Geordie country over the last couple of days, meeting an incredible maker going by the name of @crowneandskull , who focuses on designing and making bespoke furniture. He creates these pieces predominantly using hand tools, so it was a great way for me to learn the core skills of carpentry and even showed me how to do user restore on my planer, finished off with the techniques of how to use one properly. I’ve featured some of his finished work in this post including the Goliath Dining table that he planed by hand. He shared with me the art that inspires him, which for him takes the form of tattoos. The incredible pieces of art on the wall come from two talented artists named @sway_tattooer (Right) and @fidjit (Two on the left). Thanks to my sister I also got to try the local delicacy known as a Parmo. Similar to a schnitzel, it traditionally consisted of chicken in breadcrumbs topped with a white béchamel and Parmesan cheese. I found that pairing this with a few cans of lager was a perfect combination. Thank you for the hospitality, knowledge and time bro. When ya in the Lakes give me a nudge and I’ll whip up a hotpot and give you a tour of the bitchin’ barn. #wheneastmeetswest #moreinformationcomingsoon #showbusinessdarling

I had a bloody wonderful day with Ste and Mark from @manorwoodworks. These boys are incredibly knowledgeable and have such a broad range of skills in all ‘manor’ of disciplines. The overview they gave me of all the machines they have especially the Apex UV printer was fascinating. They have a lot of exciting plans for the future, especially projects that will benefit the maker community. #soundnortherners #aroseinbetweentwothorns #shuttheshed

I once dreamt of a corner office looking over a concrete kingdom. Now my ‘office’ looks like this and I prefer it. At some point I might build a little bench and desk space utilising all the fallen branches, as sitting on the ground all day gave me a sore arse. But right now, I think it’s time for a Stella.

Those who know me well, understand that I am either all in, or all out. I’ve been fortunate enough to find something that I not only love, but also allows me to join a community of like minded individuals. Don’t be a cog in the system, find what you love and get involved! Get out there and do, rather than say you will. Get inspired by others. Surround yourself with people who push you and support you. This week alone I’ve been inspired by so many people. Big shout out to the following brothers and sisters:

So here is the final result. Total cost for the whole room renovation was £85 (not including the kitchen sink). ---
The foam flooring was my favourite upgrade as it added a little insulation and it is easy to keep clean. Its a great idea for a workshop in the spare room as it would protect the carpet from dirt and spills. ---
The cheapest 'work around' was the paper mache wall. I didnt want to invest in plastering (in terms of both cost & time) so I picked up some old newspapers from my mums house and a £5 carton of PVA glue and covered 2 walls in it. ---
The paint that covers the loft panels was floor paint that I had. It has really protected the wooden loft panels and practically made them water proof. The light strip was sourced from ebay, it was a 20m strip which can change colours, useful for the occasional barn rave!

Here some progress photos of the Living area build. I created this as an escape from the workshop, a priority is having a warm place to make a brew! The structure of the kitchen was made from a mixture of pallet wood and off cuts from a local timber yard. The rest was made from loft panels, as this was the cheapest per square metre. The wooden shelving was already installed, I just installed cupboard doors and boxed off the sides.

Here is the plan for those of you that are interested. The cover photo of my last post was taken from the rear (facing the wood storage & rubbish store). The workshop / studio was positioned on the 1st floor to make best use of the natural light, this was important given I'm not connected to any utilities. In this area I gave the stone walls another coat of white, fitting wooden panels to the ceiling (prior to this is was just the roof slate and trusses) and put wooden sheeting over the original floor boards. The living area needed more TLC, I fitted an upper platform, insulation, made a kitchen, separate storage area and panelled in some shelves to create cupboards. ------------------------------------------

Today marks the one year anniversary of moving into my off grid workshop in the Lake District. It’s originally an 18th century barn that hadn't been looked after for quite some time. The person before me used it as a storage / lockup for his building supplies and let it go into disrepair, before that it was used by a wood turner. It took me 6 months to renovate it. It was slow progress at first because I was still studying for my masters degree, but it was a good outlet at the time to de-stress. I will upload pictures of what it looks like today over the next couple of days, but Happy Anniversary to me and the off grid Workshop / Barn! ———————————————————————————
