“Amboseli [National Park in southern Kenya] is the ultimate canvas to encounter elephants in their natural environment,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Dana Kennedy. “This bull elephant is charging our vehicle [and came] within meters of us. It was a compelling display of 12,000 pounds of fury — and for me, to experience how it feels to be on the receiving end of that power was humbling. Heart racing, and adrenaline high, I managed to get [this] shot.”

“There is so much to like about this fantastic image. This image is very well toned in black and white. I also love the moment of the elephant shaking some dirt off of itself, and the cloud of dust that is flowing to the left side of the frame. I also like how there are two more elephants in the background of this image. Great work on using a tight composition to bring us up close with this creature.” — @natgeoyourshot Producer Matt Adams (@themattadams)

Photo by @taylorglenn // Moonlight illuminates Mt Kilimanjaro and our tents under a clear, starry night at Shira camp. It was around 3am and I was a bit restless. I decided to take a peak outside and there was no question that I had to make a photo. We were climbing via the Machame route and this camp is typically used on day 2. You never know what kind of weather to expect and I wanted to be sure I had a great landscape shot of 'Kili'. This is one of the favorites I made during our ascent. #Followmeto Bali with @natalyosmann. ✣ This island is like a chameleon for me. First time we came here was around four years ago and we didn’t really understand the island. The problem was that we only went to the touristic spots and stayed mostly in Seminyak. ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ To really understand the island - you have to feel it and to seek for some hidden gems - you will see that it has a lot to offer: from the beautiful beaches of Uluwatu, to the peacefulness of Ubud. We managed to see the temples we haven’t seen before (though I regret, not waking up for Lempuyang temple on sunrise), managed to experience the ceremonies with local shamans and drove bike everywhere even it if was raining cats and dogs, found some really cool cafes in Seminyak with which we fell in love. This island is forever in our hearts. ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ Share your experience if you been there and how it changed if you came several times? What are your favorite places there? 🎵parcels: gamesofluck

During my search for jaguars in America I photographed his cougar with the help of a camera trap set-up in the Santa Rita Mountains near the US-Mexico boarder. Although I'm often led down the right trails with the help of local biologists - in this instance those from the University of Arizona - nothing is guaranteed. Thankfully camera traps don't discriminate and sometimes they return gems like this young cougar up from Mexico.

This Thurs Jan 18th, during my National Geographic Live! talk in Ontario's Centre In The Square theatre, I'll share with you the ups and downs of my adventures "On The Trails of Big Cats" along with other unexpected camera trap subjects. Our animal family is so much like us - they find mates, they have kids, they have to feed themselves and their families,
they feed themselves and their families in the same way we as humans used to! If we can find a way to believe they think, feel and have emotions, maybe we can treat them better and find a way to ensure their future on this planet.
They are keystone species in their ecosystems, though we as humans are not. The forests and grasslands of big cats give us 50% of our oxygen and 75% of fresh water. If we can save big cats we can help save ourselves! Follow me @stevewinterphoto to other images and thanks!
