#Day7 of the #7DayChallenge

GET INVOLVED AND PLAY UNIFIED.

For almost 20 years, Special Olympics has offered sports teams that blend people with and without intellectual disabilities, and this is a model that encourages sports and fun, and which also gets people together to learn more about each other. It's an amazing way to share the joy of sports with everyone - just ask Boston Iacobazzi!

Special Olympics Unified Sports®️ is an inclusive sports program that combines an approximately equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competition.
Three models exist within Unified Sports:
Competitive Unified Sports
Unified Sports Player Development and
Unified Sports Recreation.
All three models provide different types of experiences in team sports such as basketball, football and volleyball and in other sports such as bocce, golf and tennis. Unified Sports is now offered throughout the world and has been a Special Olympics internationally sanctioned program since 1989.
Special Olympics Unified Sports promotes social inclusion through shared sport training and competition experiences for individuals with and without intellectual disabilities
.
Unified Sports has proven to be highly effective in achieving social inclusion. Athletes feel a sense of belonging; they can meaningfully interact with others, develop mutually rewarding relationships, are recognized as contributors and are received with acceptance and respect.

Be a part of the #InclusionRevolution and encourage your friends and family to #PlayUnified at school or in the community! It's a powerful way to bring everyone together!
Find out how you can be a part of the Unified Sports Program by visiting our website http://sout.org/getinvolved/become-a-unified-sports-partner/ or be emailing our Unified Sports Program Manager - Ashley Taylor at chatterton@sout.org!

We deliver high-quality, year-round competition and training opportunities in an inclusive culture that stresses athletic excellence, rewards determination, emphasizes health, and celebrates personal achievement.

Inspiring Communities
As athletes become empowered, they have opportunities to get involved in decision making, public speaking, and leadership roles.

Creating Friendships
Athletes have many opportunities to make friends and socialize in an accepting environment. They discover they are not alone.

#Day5 of the #7DayChallenge

Become a Unified Partner or Athlete.

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. Being a Unified Partner and Athlete is an amazing experience - just ask Ivan Obed!

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.
Our opponent is intolerance. Only shoulder-to-shoulder, as teammates together, can we defeat it.
Unified Partners play an invaluable role in the lives of our athletes — becoming teammates and friends with our athletes on and off the playing field. Participation on community-based teams is open to all interested individuals ages 8 and up.
Get involved as a Unified Partner and find out how you can created a unified sports program in your community or school. http://sout.org/getinvolved/become-a-unified-sports-partner/

#Day3 of the #7DayChallenge

Get Involved as a Head of Delegation (HOD). Did you know that Heads of Delegations (HOD's) provide leadership, communication, training and administrative support to the athletes and coaches within regional/area delegations (delegations are divided into teams which consists of athletes who train and compete in their chosen sports)? As a HOD, you teach the skills and instill the spirit that defines a true athlete; serving as role models and character builders while helping athletes and coaches identify and develop their own strengths and abilities. It's an extremely fulfilling experience! Just ask HOD of Jimmy's Jaguars - Lisa Pauley!

Working closely with Special Olympics Utah staff, you ensure that the athletes and coaches experience the athletic, physical, cultural, and social benefits of participating in sport competitions and invitationals. Special Olympics Utah will provide sports training through our HOD and Coaches Education program for those interested leading a delegation.

The return on leading a delegation is priceless. You become more than a teacher, mentor, and role model, you become trusted friends to our athletes and their families, and help create a community of inclusion.
Find out how you, or someone you know, can create a Delegation and bring together athletes in your community to be a part of Special Olympics Utah! For more information, please contact Nathan Badell, Director of Sports Programs @ badell@sout.org.

#Day2 of the #7DayChallenge

Get Involved as a Coach.

Did you know that coaches are the key to a successful sports experience for the Special Olympics Utah athlete?

As a coach, you work closely with your Head of Delegation (HOD) to teach sports skills, model good sportsmanship, and build character. You give athletes the most immediate awareness of their self-worth, ability, courage, and capacity to grow and improve both on the playing field and off. It's a life changing experience - just ask Dr. Angie Canada!

The lessons our athletes learn through sports – teamwork, self-discipline, goal setting, appropriate socialization skills – carry over into their everyday lives, making them more productive and respected members of society.

Do you or someone you know want to be a part of making a difference for a Special Olympics Utah athlete? With Training and Area Competitions just around the corner, now is the time to #GetInvolved!

The 2018 Special Olympics Utah State Basketball Tournament presented by Miller Family Philanthropy and the Utah Jazz is the first year as a standalone season for basketball, and we couldn't be more appreciative of all who helped make this a smashing success.

First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks to the Miller Family and Utah Jazz! They all made opening day a fun, high energy and exciting experience for all. We also thank them for their continued support of Special Olympics Utah as the tournament title sponsor, and for their commitment to the continued growth of our basketball program on a statewide level.
Secondly, thank you to over 200 volunteers and friends who shared their time, energy, and smiles over the two day tournament, giving support, high fives and hugs to our athletes while creating an amazing experience for all involved. We’ve already received so much positive feedback about this event, as well as the quality and caliber of volunteers that were onsite giving of their time and support. Our athletes felt the love!
And last, but definitely NOT least! Congratulations to our athletes, coaches and heads of delegations for sharing their love of sport and competition with all of us! We loved watching you all play and compete! WAY TO PLAY! See you all next year!

Don't forget! The Utah Summer Games are up next on June 8-9!

The first day of the 2018 Special Olympics Utah State Basketball Tournament presented by the Miller Family Philanthropy and the Utah Jazz was a huge success.
Tonight as we officially opened the games, we were honored to have Officer Amanda Zeller of WVCPD and Karen Neilson of the South Davis Warriors carry the Flame of Hope as the Special Olympic Utah cauldron was lit. We are so appreciative of the support we receive from our friends in law enforcement.
The tournament continues tomorrow! Join us!
