Sometimes setbacks come at the worst times. With just two weeks to go until Whistler 70.3, one of the BATW crashed her bike last weekend. Skidding along her right side, she’s got some impressive road rash, a possible cracked rib, and a sore shoulder that makes it painful to swim. But she got back on the bike the next day to crush a 3-hour Zn3/race-pace workout and this morning hit her numbers hard on a threshold brick. •
She says: “I’ve been thinking about the Belgian diver who led the Thai Navy Seals to the soccer boys stuck in the cave. He said he’d never seen such terrifying and dangerous conditions in 30 years of cave diving. He told the Navy commander to call off the search, saying someone would be killed. But then he told himself “there are kids in there waiting for us. Get on top of your emotions and get back in the cave.” •
Rather than circle the drain of disappointment and frustration, get busy. Focus. Do whatever you can to get back in the cave.
Mountains or beach ??•
Would you rather — •Ride along the coastal highway looking out over the ocean at the distant horizon line breathing in the salty air, racing a seagull that glides through the wind like a sine wave; running along the water line on hard-packed sand being chased by the waves, your skin glistening from the reflection of the sun, and then you cool off with a dive into the surf, feeling the force of Mother Nature as your body is tossed around by the force.
•Inject pain into your quads as you climb, wondering at every switchback if the peak is around the corner, until finally you summit the pass. You take a moment to catch your breath in the thin air before descending, rounding the sweeping corners, the centripetal force sending flutters through your heart. Running through landscape that changes from trees to rocks, on a single track trail between a wall and a steep drop, until you reach a clear, still lake; your ripples disrupt the reflection of the snow-capped mountain as you dive in.
The BATWomen voted unanimously for mountains - but lucky for us in the Pacific Northwest we don’t have to choose!
This weekend Cymon will ride at Mt. St. Helens with @pdxtriclub and Amy will be splashing around the San Juan Islands #pnwforthewin#funfactfriday
