Sunrise atop Adam's Peak (Sri Padaya), Sri Lanka - a sacred place for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. .

As news stories rolled in about the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, so have a flood of memories from Audrey's childhood living there (6-7 years old). Also, our travels there — meeting people on trains, sharing sunrise with pilgrims and travelers alike at the top of Adam’s Peak, wandering through the tea gardens, learning to cook Sri Lankan food in clay pots, admiring sleeping Buddha sculptures in caves, among others. .

While it may seem like strange timing to write about travel in Sri Lanka now, we felt it was important to remind people of the beauty and joy of the country. And, we hope to encourage you to keep Sri Lanka on your travel wish list to help support the country as it recovers.⁣

When you do visit, check out our latest post (link in bio) with 19 of our favorite experiences from the time we spent in Sri Lanka. You'll notice a bit of theme: train journeys, tea plantations, treks, and a bit of secluded beach or meditation time.⁣ ⁣.⁣
Bonus if you click through: a sneak peek of intrepid traveler Audrey at 6-years old from when her family lived in Sri Lanka.

Photo by @andrea_frazzetta | A lonely fisherman in the waters of the Mozambican Canal off the north coast of Madagascar. Nothing like the ocean can enchant my eyes. We call it Earth but the ocean covers more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet. Healthy oceans are the life support system for our planet and a home to more than 700,000 species. The oceans are vital to human health as well, providing jobs, food…. and happiness to billions of people. Photo by Martin Schoeller @martinschoeller | From an interview series I did on religious leaders in New York City. This is Rabbi Shlomo Kugel. Religion: Chabad Judaism. "The world seems to have a life of its own that contradicts the notion of a Creator; things seem to be random, things go in every which way and without rhyme or reason. The truth is that there is purpose and meaning in everything, even a leaf blowing deep in the forest. It's all part of God's master plan.

The world looks like a bad place in many ways. But every human being, every animal, every part of creation, is essentially a part of God's goodness. If you uncover that, the evil will melt away.

Science does that in a very clear way. The deeper we get into the beauty of the human body or of the cosmos, we are looking right at God. Some people see it as a contradiction. It's just the opposite." For more pictures and stories of religious leaders in NYC, follow me @martinschoeller

Good Morning | Photograph by Varun Aditya (@varun.aditya)
“When the sun began rising magnificently and painting the sky with golden hues one morning at Maasai Mara, we spotted a lion pride,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Varun Aditya. “Like a gift that was waiting to be received, the lion gave me a perfect morning stretch with a big yawn. Like a ball of light that carefully passed through the edges of the lion’s body, nature perfectly outlined the stretch with rim light. As I observed this beautiful moment, I realized that there can be never be a better artist that nature!”

“The light outlining this big cat having a yawn makes a comical moment come to life in such a dramatic way. I’m laughing but also in awe of the gorgeous golden light! Nice!” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

This desert beach is a pastel dream come true. “The sound of the crashing waves, the immense sand, the shades that touch the water and the sand are always a great inspiration,” says photographer Ana Marques (@anamarques210376). #WHPplanetearth
