If you have a one-sided issue, your solution should be one-sided as well
.
One of the most common questions I get from clients when I give them a unilateral (one side) exercise is “should I do the other side, too?”
.
My usual response (unless doing the other side impedes recovery) is “well, only if you want to, but it won’t help with your injury.”
.
Corrective exercise is not the same as general fitness or exercise
.
When your body has a one-sided problem, it often uses the other side to compensate, so if you train the asymptomatic side, you could be doing yourself more harm than good. Or, you could be creating an overly strong pattern where there wasn’t
.
It’s like if you had one tire on your car that was a little flat. The other tires don’t need the extra air, just the flat one. If you put extra air in the other tires that didn’t need it, they would either just be overinflated, or possibly risk a puncture more easily
.
If you have a unilateral problem, doing bilateral strengthening movements (strengthening both sides at the same time, like pushups, squats, deadlifts, and pullups) is likely not doing you any favors
.
Until the problematic side catches up with the non-problematic side, do unilateral movements, like lunges, side planks, single leg deadlifts (as beautifully demonstrated by @laurenbrooksfitness in the photo), and rows
.
Sometimes, your parts need different types of TLC. Not fair to put them all on the same program all the time
.

This week’s Movement Monday:
.
Knee and spine stabilization with hip mobility!
.
Put a slingshot band or a miniband around both lower thighs (above the knees) for resistance.
.
Then place the non-working leg in a kickstand position to the back or out to the side, and hip hinge the working side.
.
Make sure the working knee (the side you’re hinging with) stays outward or rotate that hip outward while hinging for greater synergistic function!
.
This will get you a single-sided synergistic knee-hip-ankle-spine relationship 🙂

Normally I don’t advocate pistol squats if you you want to avoid back problems (airborne lunges are way better for your back!)....they’re typically better for the ego.....but when you have a knee you’re trying to protect and you don’t want to touch the floor with your hands....and you drop something....ppistol squats are #functionalaf 🤣🤘

Why many scoliosis treatments SEEM like they might be working, not actually be making things WORSE or HIDDEN
.
Many scoliosis treatments don’t focus on the CAUSE of the spine being out of alignment, and only focus on the SYMPTOM only (the spine being curved)
.
This results in a visibly straighter curve, but still remaining and persistent pain in various parts of the body

Anterior Scalene Syndrome is a condition where the brachial plexus is impinged because of an excessive use or inflammation of the scalene muscle.
.
This can cause pain, tingling, and numbness in the neck and along the arm line.
.
Common recommendations to remedy Scalene Syndrome are pain medication and surgery.
.
However, Scalene Syndrome is typically just a motor control dysfunction between the scalene and the rotator cuff. .
In this particular case, it was an overactive anterior scalene inhibiting the internal rotators of the shoulder. .
We later discovered that his Scalene Syndrome caused a reoccurring disc herniation in his low back, and lack of proper motor control in the spine.
.
Rebalancing the motor control between these two took 2 minutes, and gave the client immediate relief of his symptoms, including regaining proper control of his spine and also eradicating his low back pain.

How are chocolate and liver detox supplements helping with my knee rehab??
.
The liver detox is to help with liver function so my body doesn’t have to use up so many energy resources to clean up junk in my body from foods and environmental pollution
.
Especially in places like Hong Kong (where I’ll be for the next few days), the air pollution is terrible, and you never know what’s in the food, so your body may react to certain foods or ingredients (which I’ve noticed I do)
.
This means more energy resources to allocate towards rebuilding the ligaments and meniscus (which for me, are all torn in my left knee, except the ACL)
.
The dark chocolate has magnesium in it, which helps your cells work properly, meaning my body has to work less to do more normal upkeep (again, fewer energy resources used)
.
And dark chocolate also tastes delicious and helps you sleep at night 🤘
.
I stack these with an increased boost of my daily collagen and drink bone broth when I can so my body has the raw materials necessary to repair the damaged structures as well

I recently discovered the internal status of my knee after a couple past injuries and two recent new ones
.
Basically everything in my knee is torn, except the ACL 😬
.
So....I have a few options:
1) strengthen the hell outta it and hope that my muscles will be able to do the job of the torn ligaments and entire meniscus
2) get surgery to repair them all
3) do nothing and wait till I completely wreck it to the point where I need a new knee
4) use some non-invasive techniques with rebuilding the torn structures
.
I chose to do #1 and 4
.
Just strengthening my muscles wasn’t enough, so I started seeking outside resources to repair the hardware
.
I’m avoiding surgery at all costs
.
I had AIS last month, paired it with ANF and strengthening....not enough
.
Last week I had shockwave therapy...not enough
.
Now, I’m trying prolotherapy combined with a couple other tricks up my sleeves to see if that gets the job done
.

“Can I still do __*fun activity/exercise*__?”

This is a common question with scoliosis
.
The answer is...
.
IT DEPENDS .
Some activities make scoliosis WORSE, while others are fine
.
The truth is, it is individual for each person. Each person’s scoliosis is different, and is triggered by different factors. Some will be ok doing yoga, others won’t. Some will need to be more selective with which movements in yoga they do
.
Same with weight lifting, running, and any other sport
.
