It is #nationalpollinatorweek ! ⠀ ⠀ Pollinators, like these bees at Sunset Zoo, are facing threats to their well being all across the globe due to things like pesticides and habitat loss. We depend on pollinators for about a third of all that we consume, so these guys are crucial! And you can help them!⠀ ⠀ You can help pollinators by eliminating pesticides and herbicides, creating more natural settings and planting pollinator friendly plants in your garden! ⠀ ⠀ 📸 @we_chase_the_light

Lion King has given hyenas in general a bad rep as the big bad scavengers of the savanna. While spotted hyenas, like Charlie here, do dine on the leftovers of other predators, they are also very skilled hunters of their own accord and can take down wildebeest and antelopes. They just choose to work smarter, not harder when it comes to their dinner 😉⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 📸 @at0dd

The red-crowned crane is one of the world's largest cranes. Native to Eastern Asia, the red-crowned crane is seen as a symbol of fidelity, good luck, love and long life. The red-crowned crane is listed as endangered. Wetland habitat loss, human disturbance, pollution and environmental contamination, invasive species, and the loss of habitat due to climate change have all led the population in their natural habitat to drop below 4,000. _____________________________________ @savingcranes is working to help these magnificent animals. Check out all they are doing at their website.
What’s a New Year’s Resolution? - Julian, probably. ——————————————————— This is from our enrichment bonanza Happy Zoo Year where we learned that chimpanzees are omnivores and can digest most of the same foods that we as people can, including chocolate and gingerbread like this, which they got for a fun treat! Usually their diet is mostly made up of fruits, seeds, nuts, leaves, flowers and insects! ——————————————————— How’s your New Year’s Resolution going? Share your progress and we’ll share it with Julian. 📸:Keeper Amelia
Have you ever wondered where our summer weather loving friends go during these harsh Midwest winters? Well, they move into their inside dens that are all warm and cozy so they don’t have to face the cold! Enrichment is a vital part of our animal husbandry at Sunset Zoo. Along with the animal’s health and diet, environmental enrichment is a crucial part to the quality of life and welfare of each animal in our care. We use a variety of enrichment activities to stimulate each animals activity level and their mind. Our keepers spend time studying the natural behaviors of each of the animals they care for and then work to create an activity that would engage those behaviors. __________________________________ Other times, they just give them ‘cake’ because it is their birthday and they deserve a treat! _________________________________ More enrichment like this one will happen this Sunday, January 13th, at Happy Zoo Year! See you there! 🎥: Keeper Kristen
