Marking the 45th anniversary of the Chipko Movement today, Google Doodle India invited us to create a tribute honouring the tireless efforts of the women and men who stood up against all odds protecting their forests and livelyhoods. . The importance of this peaceful protest which involved embracing and hugging of trees, protecting them from loggers led to landmark judgements back in the 1970's - 80's. This people movement spread across villages and reserved these forest lands from being sold to industries . Cut to to 2018 and our natural resources are facing similar or graver threats of being wiped out for development at a haphazard scale. With climate change at our doorstep, we have a lot to learn from our people and their peaceful ways of standing up for our future generations, we must too . A big shout out to our art director @designmeans for his patience through this intensive process as we churned out multiple drafts. . . Created with @viplov.singh . #chipkomovement#googledoodle
In 1970's India, much like today, large sections of forest land were denied access from villagers and provided to multiple industries for the production of goods and other infrastructural developments. . Angered by the continuous deforestation and it's impact on the life in their villages; The women, who form the backbone of this movement, walked into dense forests and kept an all night vigil, protecting the trees by linking hands, physically preventing the loggers from touching or reaching them. . The success of this protest sparked a massive non violent movement bringing together multiple Himalayan villages, who began fighting for their forests by embracing trees and hugging them, bringing life to the Chipko Movement. . . Our Google doodle pays tribute to these very people whom we have much to learn from today. India stands in a very similar position even after all these years, with acres of forests, plateaus and rivers being blocked out for developmental needs. These resources are the links to life on Earth, and without understanding them, we don't build ourselves a stronger future. 🌳🌳🌳 . Created with @viplov.singh . #chipkomovement#googledoodle
