Modern luxe homeware and accessories, designed, printed and handmade by sisters @abigailwilki and @isabelwilko in their south London studio
#marchmeetthemaker Day 21: Sketchbook & lists. Playing catch-up on MMM today! We love drawing and painting from nature, so take sketchbooks everywhere we go.
#marchmeetthemaker Day 19: Can't live without. Our fabric printing area @arthublondon is the absolute bees knees, with loads of space for screenprinting and heatpressing. We'd be lost without this space for experimenting, spreading out and making a mess
#marchmeetthemaker Day 18 – Inspiration. The Ray is named after a river, and our studio is next to the river, so it seems fitting that we get a lot of inspiration from the river! This is just one source – others include our love of mythology, folklore, and symbolism and pattern in natural forms. We're currently working on a set of prints based on tarot cards! Where do you find your ideas?
#marchmeetthemaker Day 17 – Customers and Feedback. Markets are the place where we get to meet our lovely customers face to face. It's always a thrill to chat to people about our designs and see them go away happy, though the weather can bring its own challenges! We were glad to be inside on this freeeeeeeezing snowy day (not unlike today!) for the Ministry of Making market in Peckham last Christmas.
#marchmeetthemaker Day 15: Boomerang! Also cheating and slipping in branding and packaging which we missed. We always pack our products in glitzy gold, and modern metallics have always been a huge part of our brand - we love to include a touch of gold or silver in all our designs
#marchmeetthemaker Day 14: Dreams and Plans. One of our main goals when we started The Ray was to have our products stocked in beautiful, fun and interesting shops, filled with covetous products from brands we love. Last year the marvellous and incredibly stylish @gltch.be in Antwerp became our first stockist ( @gltch.be)
#marchmeetthemaker Day 13: Work Clothes. It's warming up a bit now, but in deep midwinter our studio clothes are layer upon layer. High ceilings and huge open spaces make the studio lovely and bright, but incredibly difficult to heat! And we both have a collection of old bits and bobs that we can wear while printing, so that we can smear ink everywhere with impunity.
Bia Lessa's SCAR installation @southbankcentre's Women of the World festival is excellent, and women everywhere are warriors
#marchmeetthemaker Day 9: How It's Made. As we design, print and sew every piece ourselves, there are a lot of steps that go into how we make our products! But here's the print expert @isabelwilko in her element
#marchmeetthemaker Day 8: Flatlay. Our business started with pleather makeup bags embellished with foil that Abi made at fashion school in Buenos Aires - they were a huge hit at our first craft fair and we decided to get a studio and have a go at making some more! We moved on to designing and printing repeat patterns on natural fabrics, with designs inspired by our love of mythology, folklore, and symbolism and pattern in natural forms.
#marchmeetthemaker Day 7: Routine. You'll find us in the studio on weekends as we have day jobs during the week - and fitting in marketing, sewing and admin in the evenings. Studio days are essential for us, it's rare time when creativity takes precedence over everything else!
