The terrific people who join our shop rides and become part of our shop family are the ones who keep us going and happy. Coffee, banana bread , bike rides, Adirondack chairs and ham lunches. It’s all about community. Upside is that we are fortunate to have some of the amazing people share theses things with us as they live in the LA area and Topanga while the downside is they often move along on new adventures. @barthdamon is exactly that and we will miss him as he heads out of California for a new creative protect. Bon voyage buddy. #bonvoyage#creativepeople#hamlunch#coffee#bananabread#topanga#topangalife
I counted 26 riders this morning on our way up from the shop! Perfect send off for Matt who is heading to Brighton, UK to embark on a new life adventure next month. Good luck, Matt! I’m sure we’ll see you again.
8 AM ride tomorrow. A little fair warning. @onion.sauce is on a little R&R trip eating tapas some far away place. Our Saturday ride will be short that slow guy who is always saying he’s helping corral everyone when in fact he’s just chilling in the back. Anyway, show up a bit early so the chaos can start right at 8 and last for a couple hours. Always hills. Always fun. Always a good crowd of people.
He’s our firewood guy. Hat John. A wood stove keeps our little cabin Outpost warm in the winter and this dude supplies the wood for us. When we returned from the evacuation it was clear that the time away had impacted everyone in Topanga including Hat John. We immediately picked up a load of wood from him and have gone back for more. His income had also disappeared during the evacuation and he needed to get back up and running, too. If you need a load of firewood for camping or anything, we will give you directions to his place. (Topanga is a little different and we need to also explain about leaving him the money in the envelope after you get the wood when he’s not around, etc.). #hatjohn#firewood#topangalife#topanga#cabinlife
How did Nunu get his name? A decade ago we hired a new staff member but in true bike shop dude form (not necessarily proud of this story) we didn’t want to commit to his name so we called him “New Guy”. Lacking a sense of humor and ability to work around bikes he didn’t work out. Luckily we didn’t waste our brain cells on his actual name and he disappeared. A short time later this New character was completely competent working at our favorite coffee place and we offered him a job being a sorta renaissance guy. While we kinda expected him to work out, considering our previous hire we also didn’t want to get too close too soon so we referred to him as “New new guy” wondering how many “news” we needed hire til we asked for a name. Turns out we loved this one but didn’t find out his name til we were getting tickets for our shop trip to France and Switzerland (story for another day). In the meantime we shortened New New Guy to NuNu and that’s how he got that name. We went camping with him this week. #nunu PS. @ryanwrkmn kinda spells out his real name but if you see him around he will always be NuNu to us.
We stopped during our ride today for Haiku writing and readings. It’s Bike Shop Day and @718_cyclery created it to bring attention to bike ships and encourage inclusion. @surely.its.shirley rides with us regularly and here is her Haiku she wrote and read today during the ride. Getting out there riding for us in Topanga is more than just bikes. We like to add some poetry or readings each week. #haiku#bikeshopday
