I shot this photo while working on a piece about Basque culture in Idaho for National Geographic Travel. Did you know that Idaho has the largest Basque population in the United States? In the mid-1800s Basque sheepherders brought their husbandry knowledge to Idaho. Now there are various festivals and traditions celebrated in places like Boise and Ketchum each year. Photo by @brianskerry | The U.S. Civil War submarine CSS Hunley rests in an underwater restoration facility in Charleston, South Carolina, following her recovery from the sea. In 1864 the Hunley became the first submarine to sink a ship in battle (the USS Housatonic), but the blast from the explosive device fractured the submarine's hull as well—and she sunk with a crew of eight aboard. The Hunley was discovered in 1995 and raised intact in 2000. She was placed in a state-of-the-art restoration tank that was built for this purpose. The sub is now on exhibit in Charleston. “I enjoy making eye-candy images, trying to create that wow effect that confuses the viewer about what is real and what is not,” says Ezequiel Pini, designer and founder of design studio Six N. I’m going to feature something this week which might not be that popular, but something I think is both important and interesting.
⠀⠀
Industrial History.
⠀⠀
We people visit historic sites, they are usually visiting ancient ruins, cathedrals or temples, or city centers that are several hundred years old. All of those are fine things and I’ve certainly visited my fair share of them.
⠀⠀
One thing I always like visiting are the overlooked sites which help us understand how our modern world came about. Everything isn’t churches and museums. Ore had to be mined and processed to make metals. Techniques had to be developed to create machines. Roads and railways had to be laid down.
⠀⠀
One reason people don’t visit these places is because they usually aren’t preserved. Few people thought to preserve a factory from the 19th or early 20th century. That isn’t old enough to be “history”.
⠀⠀
The first site I’m going to feature is the copper mine in Falun, Sweden. The mine operated for almost 1,000 years, only ceasing production in 1992.
⠀⠀
In the 17th century, the mine was responsible for the vast majority of copper in Europe, and was the single biggest revenue source for the Kingdom of Sweden.
⠀⠀
Working in the mine hundreds of years ago was horrific. Large fires were lit inside to crack the rock so it could be extracted. Miners would often go months without seeing daylight. ⠀⠀
The mine tour is fascinating and gives you a look into how mining was conducted centuries ago. The area around the mine was originally built for mine workers, but today it is just regular housing for people in the city. ⠀⠀

Photo by @James.Rushforth | A highliner battles strong winds while attempting to walk the one-inch wide piece of nylon webbing at Monte Piana in the Italian Dolomites. The town of Misurina and the Cadini di Misurina mountain group can be seen in the background. Once the site of vicious trench and tunnel warfare during the Great War, the table-top plateau is now frequently visited by highliners from around the globe who travel here to take advantage of the many exposed buttresses. | For adventure and action photography framing is key to ensure the subject is suitably prominent whilst still including enough of the surrounding environment for context - Image shot at 35mm, 1/320s at f/9, ISO 100.

Blue hour 💙 I’ve been challenging myself recently to shoot a series with just one lens - here’s 10 shots I took on the walk to my neighborhood wine shop a couple days ago. Any guesses on the lens?
