Blunt-headed tree snakes have GIANT hypnotizing eyes, are mildly venomous, slow moving, and spend most of their lives high up in the rainforest canopy. As I cradled these impossibly slender snakes in my hands, it instantly became clear that although they were the same species - they seemed to be nothing alike. One of the snakes curled into her own coils on my warm skin (‘Oooh this is nice!’). The other refused to be still and kept searching, launching her body out, and flicking her tongue (‘Let me go! Let me GO!’). With one face hidden and the other always moving, it was almost impossible to photograph these two bug-eyed blunt-head tree snakes. But one trick I’ve learned with snakes over the years is that if I cup my hands over them and wait a few minutes, they will calm down. When I did this, I could feel In the space between my palms that both were dozing. When I opened my hands the two bodies had intertwined, but in fact nothing had changed: one of the snakes was still instantly ready to move. The more sleepy (or lazy) of the two seemed to turn to the other as she left and ask, ‘Where are you going, it is nice in here!’. The nuances in animal behavior, even within the same species, never cease to amaze me. These two little snakes could not have had more different personalities.

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // The calm and temperate waters of Holbox (Quintana Roo) are important feeding grounds for hundreds of whale sharks. Not surprisingly, the area also attracts hordes of tourists keen to swim alongside these gentle giants. In recent years, advisories and regulations have come in place to protect the sharks, but like many eco-tourism regions, the Isla Mujeres finds itself seeking solutions to the complex equation that is wildlife conservation and tourism. #FollowMe on @CristinaMittermeier as our @Sea_Legacy team investigates what it means to be a responsible tourism operator and guest. #Ocean #Conservation #Tourism #WhaleShark

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPlookup
Tilt your eyes upward for this weekend’s hashtag project: #WHPlookup. 👀 Here are some tips to get you started:
Think vertical. Exaggerate the vertical composition of your photos and videos by putting your hair up in a beehive-styled do, building a five-scoop ice-cream cone or stacking a tall pile of summer reading.
Shoot from a low angle. Capture the height of a redwood tree canopy from the forest floor, or take a street-level Hyperlapse of the sun rising between skyscrapers.
Capture the action. Focus on a basketball player dunking, an airplane flying directly overhead or the mountain summit where you’ll finish your climbing journey.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPlookup hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.
