The Well Woman Coalition

Taking calculated risks is one of the best ways to level up in our lives, careers, and even relationships. For those of us forging our own paths, sometimes it’s the ONLY way. Although it can be scary, if your gut is telling you to make a move, trust in your intuition, talent, and worth...and make the jump. The net will appear. 🙏🏼

Sundays are for the Soul ✨
We see so many images of elaborate and expensive beauty gimmicks masquerading as self-care. But self-care looks different for everyone. Find what works best for you and do it on purpose today. ✨

Very excited to share the news that @wellwomanhealth will be hosting its first retreat during Breast Cancer Awareness Month at one of my favorite places - @esalen in Big Sur! Breast cancer surgeon (and my doctor) @drkristifunk and I will co-teach “Well Woman: A Restorative Retreat for Women Touched by Breast Cancer.” Whether you are considered high risk for developing breast cancer, carry a genetic mutation, have breast cancer, or are a survivor, this educational and experiential wellness retreat is for you. Enveloped by Big Sur’s magical ocean, earth, and sky, this empowering retreat is an opportunity to foster greater health and renewal, all while being nourished by fresh organic meals from Esalen’s farm and pampered in the healing hot springs. Scholarships are available on Esalen’s website but you must apply asap to be considered in time for our workshop. Hope to see you there in a loving and supportive group setting to focus on collective healing for body, mind, and spirit!

Trauma manifests in our body, leading to a variety of physical symptoms and even disease. Doctors may explain away these symptoms or prescribe medication to mask them but many times, the root lies in energy work to process and release old traumas. Our spiritual/mental health is a critical part of our physical health. You can’t have one without the other. Where do you carry trauma? #wellwoman

It’s #feelitonthefirst, our monthly reminder to perform regular breast self-exams. Even if everything feels fine, getting to know our “normal” helps us to detect any changes right away. 💕 #empoweredhealth //art via @socal_breasties

Entre las mujeres hispanas, el cáncer de seno es el más común y el que más mata. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death amongst Latinas. Yet it is rare to see brown faces or stories reflected in national cancer awareness efforts, let alone any quality educational materials on hereditary cancer IN SPANISH. This is why I founded LATINX & BRCA in partnership with @basserbrca - to address the lack of awareness and education of BRCA in the Latinx community (particularly for Spanish-speakers). Thank you to @peopleenespanol for highlighting LATINX & BRCA, hereditary cancer, and genetic testing.

Tea has been called the “mental health super drink.” With so many health benefits for your body and your brain, it’s no wonder drinking herbal tea is an integral part of holistic health. Matcha/green tea and camomile are my favorites. What’s your favorite tea to curl up to? 🍵#MentalHealthAwarenessMonth //art by @marcelailustra via @fiercebymitu

It’s hard to make sense of our rock bottoms, pain, and struggles. Hearing “it only makes you stronger” can feel minimizing at times. But if we train ourselves to look for the lesson, then suffering and pain can reveal purpose. We can ask ourselves “What is this moment trying to teach me? How can I come out of this experience more authentically me?” #wellwoman

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for Latinas and their leading cause of cancer deaths. Latinas also present for care with more advanced stages of breast cancer. That’s why I have partnered with @basserbrca at Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center to found LATINX & BRCA. It is a comprehensive initiative to raise awareness, provide education and resources, and build community for the U.S. Latinx community around BRCA-related cancers. We provide ongoing resources for patients and families, including Spanish-language videos, fact sheets, and guidance on finding Spanish-speaking genetic counselors in your area. This is the first awareness campaign on the BRCA gene mutation that targets Latinos and offers Spanish-language educational materials and I couldn’t be more proud to help lead this effort through my work with @wellwomanco. Go to basser.org/latinxbrca to access these resources. x Alejandra #LatinxBRCA #WellWoman

#repost @acampoverdi on why The Well Woman Coalition was founded:
. . . “You had breast cancer.” After my preventive double mastectomy in October, I never thought I’d hear those words.

I’ve been super open about every aspect of my recent surgical journey, as someone who is BRCA+. And there is one more chapter I want to share.

Just six days after my “preventive” double mastectomy, I received a call from my doctor telling me that turns out, it wasn’t preventive after all.
When the breast tissue they had removed was routinely tested, doctors were shocked to find Stage 0 DCIS (non-invasive breast cancer) in one of my breasts. To say that I was floored is a massive understatement.
I had recently had a mammogram and a breast ultrasound and both had come back negative. My doctor let me know that the only way we could’ve found my cancer this early was by doing what I had already proactively done. And because we caught it at such an early stage, I didn’t need to do chemo, radiation, or any other kind of treatment. In essence, I beat cancer before I knew I had it.
Our intuition is a powerful and wise guide. I felt in my gut that this was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. Learning to cultivate and trust that voice inside at all costs is one of the best gifts we can give to ourselves. It has been one of the great lessons of my life. I thank God and my grandmother’s protection for carrying me through this. I am utterly humbled by how fragile and precious life truly is.
Receiving a cancer diagnosis in your 30’s has a way of refocusing your life in an instant and I will never be the same. I hope my experience can be a testament to the fact that being proactive and preventive about our health makes a difference. Sometimes, it makes ALL the difference. #survivor <link to @latimes story in @acampoverdi bio>

The mind-body connection is very real. Science has begun to recognize the powerful connections through which emotional, spiritual, and behavioral factors affect our physical health. That’s why we can’t fully address women’s health without also acknowledging the psycho-emotional roots of disease. The body FEELS emotion. For me, stress and anxiety manifest in my stomach. Where do you feel your emotions? 🗣

Healing crystals...they are all the rage now and rose quartz is center stage. Rose quartz is considered to be one of the most important gemstones for healing. The crystal is thought to open up your heart to positive energy and love, as the heart chakra’s gemstone. Not only is it supposed to encourage self love, but also help draw new love to you or deepen existing relationships. How to use it? Some options are to wear it in jewelry, use it to make beauty water, or even just slip a crystal into your purse. I like the idea of keeping a couple pieces on my bedside table (some say to put them UNDER the bed!). Whether you believe in the healing power of rose quartz or are just curious, having a pretty reminder to open your heart around can’t hurt. Do you believe in healing crystals? 💎
