@onedayinmyworld and @Hammond_Robin are honoured to be the opening speaker at the Touching Minds, Raising Dignity conference organised by @HI_France and the French Development Agency - Agence Française de Développement.
Sharing the voices of people denied the right to speak is why we do our work so we're very grateful to be given the opportunity to talk to the audience from France, Togo, Lebanon and other countries where Handicap International works.
While we may take the stage to speak, it's more important to us that those present hear the stories of those living with mental health issues, so Robin starts his talk by introducing Hellen from South Sudan.
You can hear more from Hellen and others from the new campaign at our website www.onedayinmyworld.com

Children turn a cemetery into their playground in severely overcrowded Beddawi Refugee Camp.
Lebanon has hosted Palestinian refugee camps since 1952, when Palestinians were displaced from their homeland. These camps still exist today, with generations of refugee families, numbering more than one million people, unable to return home. They live in overcrowded and impoverished conditions, face pressures from extremist groups, and there are restrictions on their right to work. The conflict in Syria added to the camps’ numbers and collective trauma, as Palestinian refugees once based in Syria now seek refuge in Lebanon amongst fellow Palestinians. Multiple families live in one house, children grow up in a heavily militarised environment, trauma of living through war contributes to a disabling environment that can exacerbate or even cause mental health problems especially amongst children.
#InMyWorld is a campaign that seeks to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. This first phase of the project has been created in collaboration with Handicap International @handicap_uk
“Hi my name is Rick I am 23 years of age and I’m gay. Growing up I was always being treated like an outcast. I have been homeless more than one." Rick is one of hundreds who has their story with us as part of Where Love is Illegal - photographed by @hammond_robin to amplify the voices of the LGBTQI＋ community.
As Pride is being celebrated across the world, we like to look back at the cover of @Time magazine where, as part of Robin Hammond's ongoing project documenting LGBTQI+ survivors of discrimination and persecution, he went to Uganda. We love the power of this image and hope it gives strength to those taking part in Pride in places where love is illegal.
“I am always on the alert and really on the defensive because when you have a predominantly male look, like I do, you can never tell when you may become a target so I am always cognizant of that and ready to go into defense mode.” Mo (left), a #transman from #Jamaica, has seen societal tolerance improve in the last 10 years, though notes the country's movement remains far from full acceptance.
Read Mo’s story shared with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign, a platform for #LGBT stories of survival, at www.whereloveisillegal.com. You can also see how to share your own experience of #discrimination and #survival and how you can support. Photo by @Hammond_Robin / @noorimages. Today, @witness_change stands with the survivors of persecution in recognition of #IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia). We seek an end to injustice by changing the narrative of discrimination against #LGBTQI+ in places where persecution is rife.
