How old were you when you started your yoga journey? I got tagged by @bethanysmithyoga and @annecyogagirl to tell my story.

I was 40 when I started my yoga practice, primarily because of the physical benefits. You know, when you hit 40 everything droops a bit more than you like it ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜‚. As many of you I wish I would have found it earlier in my life. It's not that Yoga didn't knock on my door, though. At 15 I've been on a field trip and our teacher taught us every morning (she still teaches). I crossed Africa when I was 31 and learned how to stay present. Well, finally it knocked me out of my socks.

I haven't worked out for a couple of years when my bff asked me to join a summer special at the local gym in 2008. I bought a ticket for a month and we joined all BodyArt and some yoga classes. I bought another month before I finally signed an unlimited membership. After a few months I got stuck somehow and was looking for "more" so I met my first yoga teacher late 2009.

In May 2010 my Dad surprisingly passed at the age of 67. I was shattered but for some reason kept on practicing regularly. I realized that it was doing more for me than just a nice physic. I felt SAFE and WHOLE and READY to face LIFE. Once I felt this I was hooked and yoga has been the one thing that I have continually stuck with and have had a passion for.

Before IG's blackout (I still can't comment) @aloyoga launched @alogives, a non profit that brings yoga and mindfulness to the world by offering a FREE 12-weeks course with 5min videos to the classroom. Let's educate our children to find the mental & physical tools to support our social & emotional learning.

Is it Savasana or Shavasana? ๐Ÿค” However, did you know that this pose is supposed to prepare you to die? โ €
Basically Corpse Pose or in German "Totenstellung" trains your mind not to be scared of dying and leaving this world. You practice leaving the body and returning to it. When you're about to die, when you have to give up the body which is your abode right now it is totally up to you which new body you choose. If you are interested in going deeper "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" ("Das Tibetische Totenbuch") explains it very well.

But hopefully we don't die today so I rather spend the time restoring and recovering in a frog pose. For Day 11 of #MarchALOverYourMat we ask for any restorative pose. NO sensation, only soothing the parasympathetic nervous system. Such a treat โค๏ธ.

Since I am still alive and in need of a healthy body, sane mind and soothed soul I went with both. Never forget to give something back to yourself. Especially when you demand a lot from your body. It's the last day and I don't know what to say. This challenge is "dying" but a new one is coming. It's up to you to choose wisely. Maybe we'll see us again, maybe not. I couldn't resist... Saw this pose for #YogiSeeYogiDo all over my feed during the weekend. When I got home yesterday I had to try, got this and decided to use it for Day 11 of #MarchALOverYourMat (the one I prepared was a little less interesting ๐Ÿ˜‚).

FLEXIBILITY is mostly about a proper forward fold or the ability to open the front body. Most of what we consider as "flexible" poses are connected to our hip joints. For me it's either the hip flexors in a bend or the hamstrings in a fold. No matter if you go for crow, firefly, splits, leg behind the head or ANY knot you want to make .. the more the fold is off, the less you find your fits, the harder the post gets.

This one reminds me of a similar we did for the #YogiHowdYouDoThat but the first I saw it with was @yogaandchaigirl. She got inspired by @golden.pothos.yoga and lots of my own IG inspirations followed: @cece.carson, @leighyogipilot, @natashaswinter, @eileendelatorre, @helen_garner_yoga, @livinleggins @susanbishopyoga, @yogi.bree and many, many more. My entry is not as elegant as theirs but please bear in mind the lack of sleep, the exhaustion after all that travelling and such (looking for excuses here ๐Ÿคฃ).

How long can you hold a forearm plank? When I prepared my posts for this challenge I really thought hard about a pose for today. Eka Pada Bakasana? Something one-handed? Nothing really sparked my inspiration because for me all these poses are about technique and using the body structure in a smart way instead of muscling through. Don't get me wrong. You need some (muscle) strength to stabilise the structure. Like cement for building a house. Building a house with cement only is possible but is it sustainable? ๐Ÿค”.

For me STRENGTH means overcoming the mind telling you "it's enough". It's only the muscles, the first layer of defense giving up, then the bones, before it gets yummy (not that this pose got yummy at all ๐Ÿคช).

For Day 10 of #MarchALOverYourMat I went with a long hold forearm plank. My first attempt was about 3mins 15secs. Forgot to hit the record button and of course the second try wasn't as good as the first one (2mins). Mind won ๐Ÿ˜‚. If you try lmk your results.

This week was beyond busy for me. I can't deal with ad-hoc or spontaneous tasks like a team workshop that messes with my schedule for a week I planned so well in advance. I'm tired, I got up late, had to leave the house without breakfast ๐Ÿ™ˆ. But it's Friday now. I'm already in Cologne. A fellow #KatonahYogaTeacher @marydanayoga teaches on the Karma Yoga Festival and I am joining her pre-conference workshop. Can't.friggin.wait for it โ˜€๏ธ.
