💥💥💥Here is the big NEWS I have been dying to announce! 💥💥💥 In just two months, Scott and I will be empty nesters! We'll embark on a yearlong🗓 journey throughout the US🇺🇸 and Canada🇨🇦 in a trailer🚙 (#goingtiny) -and I'll give talks🎤 along the way! 💥Consumerism is so anchored in the US that Zero Waste is growing slower here than other parts of the world. I want to change that. Over the next year, I hope to shatter misconceptions associated with waste-free living, change mentalities, and grow the movement bigger at home! 💥Will you help me? If you live in the US or Canada and know of an organization, business, municipality or school/university ready to organize one of my talks in your town, have them contact me via the *link in the profile or *ZeroWasteHome.com -and we'll happily include that stop on our itinerary! 💥Together let's bring the US and Canada closer to Zero Waste!

Grateful🙏 to have been given the opportunity to present @Loreal. Never have I felt my "beauty" as scrutinized as when standing🎙 in front of executives of one of the world's largest beauty companies to present the zero waste lifestyle 😅... you know, with my hair washed with just a bar of soap🧼 and sans conditioner, my eyes made up with activated charcoal & homemade mascara, my nails shined with beeswax🐝 and oil... But they listened with much interest and asked lots of great questions. I am confident to have planted a seed🌱 but only time⏰ will tell!

Pantry stocked for my boys✔ Carry-on packed✔ Zizou tucked in✔
Am on my way to Vietnam 🇻🇳 for talks, interviews, the launch of #zerowastehome translated to Vietnamese -and hopefully the beginning of something bigger! I've been wanting to bring my message to this country since I visited it a couple of years ago. So much litter and yet so many available waste-free alternatives everywhere -so much potential for zero waste where people already know how to live simply...
Which part of the world🌏 has surprised you for having lots of litter but at the same time lots of unpackaged options? (Link to the events in the profile)

The biggest challenge in reducing our waste was finding balance ⚖, figuring out what worked for us and what did not.

There were no books 📚or blogs on how to eliminate trash when we started, so I had to google alternatives, test many recipes and how-to's, interview my mom, grandma and mother in-law about how people lived before our consumerist society. Along the way, I got too wrapped up into homemaking: At one point, I was making our cheese 🧀 , bread, yogurt, soy milk, butter, toothpaste, deodorant etc. These practices were too extreme, too time consuming for my full time job, and therefore unsustainable. We eventually dropped them for the sake of simplicity. For example, we realized that there was no need for us to make bread 🥖if we could buy it unpackaged with a cloth bag either directly from the bakery or from the bakery bins.

We found that for Zero Waste to be sustainable in a household, one has to adopt alternatives that fits his/her schedule/needs/family and are feasible in the long run, for life. We found that zero waste becomes a lifestyle when you let it simplify your life, not complicate it.

What has been your biggest challenge in adopting waste-free living?

I find waste-free living so fun😜. Once you've committed to it, you make mind blowing discoveries🤯.
A few months ago, it dawned on me that I could use the blood I collect in my menstrual cup to fertilize my garden plants🌱. I mean: Why buy blood meal from a nursery, when you produce it every month? Zero waste✔, vegan✔, package-free✔.
It's discoveing life hacks like these that keeps zero waste so exiting to me! You know, those moments like: Duh, why didn't I think of that before?🧐
What zero waste life hack did you recently discover?

I recently had the honor to sit down with the First Lady of Turkey 🇹🇷. Did you know that she is encouraging her whole country to go #zerowaste? 👏 I hope her example can inspire other First Ladies around the world to do the same! 🌍🌎🌏

Having experienced waste-free for over 10 years, I found that the lifestyle provides countless advantages overtime: improved standard of living, better health, huge money💰and time⏰savings, closer connection to nature🌿and loved ones, increased faith and sense of purpose, environmental optimism🌎, creativity boost, not having to take trash🗑out (duh)... the list is endless.

But there is a downside... In eliminating toxic products from our home, it seems that my olfactory senses got detoxified and therefore heightened 👃

While it's definitely an advantage being able to quickly detect a fire and to enjoy odors associated with a walk in the forest🍄, a stroll on the beach🌊, a kiss on a newborn's👶head, to their fullest, having a renewed sense of smell can be a problem: Scents that I couldn't perceive before, have become a nuisance.

I once had to change hotel rooms3⃣times, before finding a neutral-smelling one; a different time, I had to stay in a room with a dirty socks smell -I smelled it on my clothes 'til laundry day. I also stayed in a capsule airport hotel where swapping rooms wasn't an option, I had to take a sleeping pill💊to (pass out and) forget the pounding headache caused by the @Febreze that had been sprayed all over the (tiny) space with no windows -it took days to shake off the pain🤕caused by that torture alone! Same, when given homemade soaps by fans (I now refuse). I have to change seats if the person next to me wears cologne, uses scented shampoo, or eats popcorn. I don't use EO or coconut🥥oil on my body: the smell is too strong. If a jogger🏃runs past me or I walk by a dryer vent, I can name the brand of the laundry detergent used. If I take a taxi, perfume left on the seatbelt by a previous passenger bothers me. But most annoying is riding an @Uber: The "fresheners" used go straight to my head: I end up riding, my head out the window, like a dog🐶! I once read that the chemicals used in common household products reduce one's sense of smell, so would eliminating them enhance it? Have you too experienced the disadvantages of a heightened/renewed sense of smell due to waste-free living?

This graphic (excluding the red crosses on it which I'll explain) is going around on social media. I am not sure were it originated (I could only trace it to @pg_recycle but they are unable to confirm it's theirs). I thought I'd share it anyway, to point out the ironic turn that the waste-free living movement is taking on social platforms. These past couple years, I have noticed a trend (from social media influencers and bloggers) encouraging people to buy buy buy... reusables. This lifestyle is about getting away from consuming, but graphics like these ironically support the opposite!
If you are getting started on your journey, please don't go on a big shopping spree, filling your kitchen with items that you don't need in the first place. You do need a few essentials but only so few (I would encourage that you shop your home first). For over a decade our family has confortably lived waste free without the need for the items that I crossed out in red, and so can you.
Before filling kitchen drawers with such reusables as straws, beeswraps, and a phletora of containers, ask yourself: Do I even need it in the first place? Can another item in my kitchen provide the same purpose?
Remember: Waste free living is about living simply first and foremost. And one way to get to simple living is to stop unnecessary things from coming into your home. As my book explains in great detail, Reducing comes before Reusing! Happy (simple) zero waste journey!

Incredible selection of #bulk @verde_market in Miami 🇺🇸🌴
Pam and Martha even offer bug repellent 🦟 First time I see it sold in bulk!
They only opened 8 months ago, but in a city so affected by climate change and rising sea levels 💧 🌊 , they’re leading the way, providing alternatives and taking an active role in protecting our 🌎 . If you’re ever in the area pay them a visit and support them -they’ll welcome you with open arms and can even #refill your container with sunscreen! #notanad .
My talk @cleoinstitute last night gathered one of the most reactive audiences I have had on this tour. I look forward to presenting in Spanish in Santo Domingo 🇩🇴 tonight (last stop on this tour) Ojalá que tenga el mismo exito!

LOOK AT WHAT WE, AS A COMMUNITY, HAVE ACHIEVED!😀😀😀
This week, I got word from @UnileverUSA that the brand in conjunction with others, is launching 📷@loopstore_us, a zero waste delivery program: products in reusable containers (@HaagenDazs in stainless🍨😋, organic mayo in glass, etc), to be delivered to your door step in a reusable tote. The empties will then get picked up and refilled!
It almost sounds too good to be true!😍
Thanks to all of you who, with us and over the past decade, have adopted waste-free living: Our lifestyle's movement is getting attention and it's changing the world!
This is A HUGE STEP TOWARDS OUR GOAL OF HAVING A ZERO WASTE SOCIETY! #zerowaste #zerodechet #zerowastehome #unpackaged #bulk #zerowastelifestyle #5Rs #refill #reuse #zerowastehomebook #loopstore

I find litter-picking super interesting.

In Oman (pictured), I found water bottles along the path all the way into the deep desert (locals throw them out the window). And given the workings of dunes, I can't even imagine how much is hiding in them!

In Alaska, I mostly found beer containers (a high bottle deposit could easily remediate that); On the beach in Honduras, chip bags discarded by kids (school ed and/or a ban would help). In my town, it's ponytail holders (instead of buying a pack of 10 from the drugstore when I need one, I take a walk and pick one up from the street). On my favorite beach, it's shotshell wads; on that of Fiji, flip flops (1 every yard!); in the rivers of washington DC, soccer balls; in the mangroves of New Caledonia, plastic bags; on San Francisco streets and Seattle's waterfront, cigarette butts... Needless to say, I prefer encouraging people to reduce waste at the source so we would not have any to pick up in the first place. But on your next trip, give litter picking a try: Not only does it offset some of your travel, you'll come home with an interesting insight on the region!

Happy Holidays to all zero wasters out there! Hope you gave and received lots of experiences this morning!🎄 #nowastemorelife

Our tree this year is wall mounted (great for small places like our 🏡) and one of my proudest creations. A branch trimmed from our oak tree, decorated with cotton strings of homemade popcorn, dried orange slices, and stars punched in cardboard from the recycling bin. 100% homemade but also 100% compostable! Cleanup=A breeze!

Did you know? In our home, the only type of glassware we own is stemless. It can be used for water, juice, milk, wine, cocktails, etc. We bought enough (secondhand) to fill a shelf, so when we host a party, no need for disposables for any of our drinks: we make use of them all.

My favorite quote by Gandhi: Ten years ago, it inspired me to spring into action and take on the goal of #zerowaste for my family -which in turn inspired thousands to adopt waste-free living and a worldwide movement to emerge!
Who knows what the quote will do for you!

On this Thanksgiving day 🍂 I am grateful for my family supporting my dedication to spread the zero waste lifestyle worldwide (#zwhtour), for the people that have helped me to do so in 35 countries this year alone 🌎🌍🌏 and for YOU, followers around the world, who have been brave enough to dive into waste-free living: You are the living proof that this lifestyle is possible anywhere and I could not thank you enough for taking an active part in building a #zerowaste society for future generations!
A special 🙏 to those in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 who ignored their capital’s political unrest to support the movement and come to my talk on Tuesday! Thanks @zerowastePNG for bringing me. The picture speaks for itself: you gave me more than an opportunity to share my lifestyle, you gave me an experience! 🥰

Life with less is inexplicably delicious.
That's until your eldest leaves home for university and simplifies it further for you. Setting your baby free is an inevitable part of motherhood but I never expected to be so tough.. I consider myself a strong woman, far from a helicopter mom, but it still hit me like a ton of bricks.
When I took the goal of waste free living for the household over a decade ago, I had no idea what impact it would have on our family overtime... Over the years, a lifestyle based on experiences instead of stuff has created incredible memories, strong bonds between us, that only death -or maybe a future daughter in law ;-) can take away. What's so hard in this transition, is not so much letting go of my boy (we raised our sons to be independant and are excited for him to build his own life), but rather letting go of an era, of breaking that family nucleus we've nutured for 18 years.
My heart goes out to all the moms out there who set their baby free this fall, I know what you're going through and I give you a big hug.

Got to visit the #Newmarket in Tirana (one of my stops on my #zwhtour🎤) and am envious of the bulk here! They even have butter, tobacco and raki! Two of which I would buy 😁😁😁
My visit here has shattered all the misconceptions I had about Albania 🇦🇱 🇦🇱🇦🇱
For example, it is way cleaner that I thought it would be: but that’s thanks to the amazing work of @greenlinealbania which has been extremely successful in organizing extensive litter pickups throughout the country! 🌱🌱🌱 -and I am grateful for them bringing me over to share my lifestyle 🙏🙏🙏
