Video by @CristinaMittermeier // Witnessing this “rainbow river” of beluga whales in the Canadian Arctic was a highlight of my career. We traveled with @Sea_Legacy on expedition to the newly-blessed Tallurutiup Imanga marine protected area—an exciting new step by the Canadian government in attempting to protect the longest coastline of any country in the world. Mining and petroleum interests have their eyes on this region though, and it's up to the Inuit and every Canadian who cares about the environment to protect these lands from careless resource extraction. Follow me at @CristinaMittermeier to see more stunning whales, bears and landscapes from this region.

Rabbit Island is a remote 91 acre island, located just east of upper Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior.
The largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior is a 350 mile long, 3 quadrillion gallon of body of water that contains 10% of earth’s fresh surface water and is considered to be the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

Each summer @rabbitisland hosts artist residencies, and I shot this image while making a short film during a weeklong stay on the island. The day prior to this moment of glassy calm, we were pummeled with a fierce wind and rainstorm which resulted in being able to surf a point break wave that had never before been ridden!

The island has never been developed or subdivided, and a few years ago it was preserved by a conservation easement through the Keweenaw Land Trust, assuring it’s unique ecosystem will remain healthy in perpetuity.

“One of the most amazing places in Israel is the Agamon Hula, located in the center of the Afro-Syrian Rift; it is also one of the most significant bird migration routes in the world,” writes Your Shot photographer Asaf Amran. “During every migration season (fall and spring), over 500 million birds from more than 400 species migrate in the skies above us. Thousands remain at the Agamon Hula during this season.”

Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads.
