Mingshashan - the Singing Sand Dune of Dunhuang - 700 years ago Marco Polo described the sound of the wind blowing over this mountain of sand as sounding like singing. The name stuck. Here tourists trek around the dunes on camels at sunset. #silkroad #mingshashan #Dunhuang #gansu #sand #sandunes #china #mysilkroad2017 @natgeocreative @natgeo @natgeo.media @supchinanews @thesilkroadjourney

The Rainbow Mountains in China’s Zhangye Danxia Park are mostly made up of deep red sandstone. These famous mountains are indeed a geological wonder of the world but don’t believe the over photoshopped photographs you might have seen on the internet. Here’s a no filter version. #silkroad #danxia #zhangye #gansu #China @thesilkroadjourney #mysilkroad2017 @natgeocreative @natgeo.media @supchinanews

Saihoji Garden, also known as Kokedera, the moss temple, for my eye is Kyoto’s most beautiful. It’s 120 varieties of moss cover the ground in a velvety green carpet, best photographed in the rain. This Zen temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site. #saihoji #kokedera #moss #mossgarden #worldheritage #japanesegarden #zen @natgeo @natgeo.media @natgeocreative @thephotosociety.

@thesilkroadjourney is Michael’s latest project based on the ancient trade routes of explorers Marco Polo & Zheng He, retracing their journeys across land and sea. Noodles, especially those that are hand-pulled, are popular all over China, leaving one to wonder if it was Marco Polo and his Italian compatriots who introduced pasta to China or the other way around. The answer: noodles were invented in Persia and brought to Italy and China by Arab traders well before Marco Polo traveled there.

Sweeping the grounds is a morning ritual at Nonomiya, the match making shrine. Young singles come here to pray for marriage. In a Chinese Garden: "borrowed scenery." Chinese gardens create an idealized miniature landscape, often incorporating architectural elements such as this elevated walkway and scenes even outside the garden "borrowing" the willow trees and a piece of a golf course to add depth to a confined space. #chinesegarden #beijing #china @natgeo @natgeocreative @natgeo.media @supchinanews @thesilkroadjourney
